US full of Internet addicts: study

The United States could be rife with Internet addicts as clinically ill as alcoholics, an unprecedented study released suggested.

Researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine in Silicon Valley said their telephone survey indicated more than one of every eight US residents showed at least one sign of "problematic Internet use."

The findings backed those of previous, less rigorous studies, according to Stanford.

Most disturbing was the discovery that some people hid their Internet surfing, or went online to cure foul moods in ways that mirrored alcoholics using booze, according to the study's lead author, Elias Aboujaoude.

"In a sense, they're using the Internet to self-medicate," Aboujaoude said. "And obviously something is wrong when people go out of their way to hide their Internet activity."

According to preliminary research, the typical Internet addict was a single, college-educated, white male in his 30s, who spends approximately 30 hours a week on non-essential computer use.

Well lets see, I spend eight hours each day online at work. Then I come home and spend another two or three hours online. On the weekends I spend several more hours online. Our forebears got along just fine without the internet, cell phones, laptops, blackberries, indoor plumbing, central heating/airconditioning etc.

In all seriousness...I do not watch television, and I do not read papers. I get my news and entertainment from the Internet.

I just cannot stomach the pap on television. My wife and I were in a hotel over the weekend, so I took the time to watch television...(we do not have cable at home)

90+ channels, and only TWO channels had anything worth watching (Okay...I will admit, I did hover a while on the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader audition thingie...)

The Animal Channel and The Discovery Channel. The rest was simply unwatchable.

What else ya gonna put across your legs? My dad used to tell me stories of how they used to read them things called 'newspapers' in there. With nottin' to hold the paper upright but your hands, no less. Can't even imagine. Who woulda thunk it.

DId they actually have toilet paper, or did they have to use scraps torn from old books?

I just told my husband he is my enabler. He replaced my old cellphone with a Motorola Q...its little and kinda like a flask for an alcoholic (not that I couldn't just use it as a phone only...because I could...its just a shame to waste the technology).

I actually turned my PC completely off 3 nights ago.

Tom! You can't leave us on the ledge like that. Did the shakes set in? Were you able to sleep? WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
