N.Korea plans series of nuclear tests: report
Reuters ^ | 17 Oct 2006 | Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. officials say North Korea's military has informed China it intends to carry out a series of underground nuclear tests, NBC News reported on Tuesday.

No further details were provided in the report.

The United States said North Korea had moved equipment into place that may indicate it plans a second nuclear test, despite international condemnation of its first underground nuclear explosion on October 9.

North Korea has denounced U.N. sanctions over its nuclear test as a declaration of war.

Because hundreds of thousands of your fellow Americans have not been evacuated from Seoul, South Korea yet. Within the first few hours of such a war, the death toll to South Koreans, Americans, Japanese and many other nationalities in Seoul could be severe.

You do read the news and do know that so many of them live there, don't you?

However, (again, reading and watching the news), once such an ROK evacuation occurs, you shall certainly get your war.

" I say Seoul gets leveled first, after we respond with harsh diplomatic letters."

There's almost 11 million people in Seoul. If I lived in Seoul...I'd have already left for points south. Maybe take two back-to-back around the world tours on a slow boat.

note to self: what goods the intel if we don't USE it?

All intel is good. Often the best take cannot be acted on directly without revealing means and methods. That is generally a big no-no as it usually means the other side will take steps to eliminate your source. (human, technological, etc.)

But all intel, even if you don't act directly on it, helps you prepare and not be surprised. I would guess there are some things that can be learned from these tests that would allow us to extrapolate to some very useful information.

Kim will move south when the order goes out to evacuate Seoul...which will be impossible to do anyway.

It isn't so much as an order to 'move south' as it is to activate the 10,000 artillery tubes.

The DPRK has notified China and Japan that any enforcement of the UN sanctions will result in hostile action on their (DPRK) part. This puts the US and Japan in an untenable position. If there is even so much as an interdiction, they will attack the south (Seoul). So the compassion of peaceful nations is used for nuclear and economic negotiation, with a city of ten million people as the bargaining chip. Not to mention the global economic disruption that would result from evacuating from the 38th several clicks south. This is a lose-lose scenario for the US, Japan, and ROK. DPRK does not have much more to lose.

According to another thread on FR today, this has happened to Chinese intel sources in the DPRK - they have assumed room temperature.

Someone will have to blink soon. Lets hope it isnt us or the allies. If we do, we will begin a trend of being blackmailed that may not be very reversible.

I hope some of the more brilliant minds in our government have an out of the box solution for this brewing mess.

24 Empty tubes and an SSBN with increased buoyancy would be an out of the box solution that would work. No one would ever expect the gloves to come off quite like that.
