Please add me to your ping list for Senator Michael Steel. Even though I don't live in Maryland any more I still try to follow what is going on. Thanks.

Dear Talking_Mouse,

I don't have a formal ping list, since the election will be over in another three weeks.

However, I will try to remember to ping you.

I often go through older threads to see who was interested, and thus, it's quite likely, if I post anymore on the topic, I'll see your name, and remember to ping you.

I heard a rumor this morning that Don King was coming to Md. to stump for Steele. Not sure that will help.

I have not seen this one on TV yet, but it sounds like a good one. I am proud to say that some of my money is going to pay for the airtime. I would be great for Maryland and the Republicans if Steele can pull this election off.

Dear sgtbono2002,

Mr. King has endorsed Mr. Steele.

As reported in the Washington Times, he has been campaigning with Mr. Steele in Prince George's County and Baltimore City.

There is a connection there that most folks don't realize exists. Mr. Steele's sister was briefly married to the boxer Mike Tyson.

So I heard. Again, not so sure that will help.

I think it will help. In MD, about 30% of eligible voters are African-American. They usually vote about 90% for Dems. Even if just 20% either switch or stay home, it would give Steele a victory.

Thanks for the ping. That is a devastating ad. Reminds me of the first one the SwiftVets did in 2004, though I've never seen any as powerful as that one was.

Thanks for the ping

I'm hoping Steele pulls it off.

I want to see some new blood in Maryland. Dems have been in power too long

Great ad.

**
I watch almost no local tv, so I have not really seen that many ads, but, from what I have seen, it appears that Cardin's only message is Steele = The Evil Bush. I think Steele's ads are great. He has it all over Cardin in looks and in charisma. Trouble is the Rats have such a well-oiled voter fraud machine. Remember what they did to Sauerbrey.

I have a little more hope for Steele, though, than I do for Ehrlich.

Did you catch the Ehrlich/O'Malley debates. I caught only the second half of the second one, but I was impressed with Ehrlich's performance. O'Malley looked like a bumbling idiot, and I really did try to watch objectively, putting aside my personal dislike of MOM, just to rate their performances.

Ehrlich was poised and seemed prepared for anything, whereas MOM seemed to be just reciting some canned attacks. Did you notice how he kept employing the Bill Clinton eye squint?

As an aside, I really wanted to call Ehrlich to say, "Bobby, get some sideburns!" What's up with that?

Dear speekinout,

You're right, at least in most circumstances in Maryland. In Maryland, Republican candidates can receive about 65% or so of the non-black vote. Statewide, if they get a little better than 20%, they usually win.

Mr. Ehrlich received 22% of the black vote in 2002.

Unfortunately, not all Republican candidates statewide receive 65% of the non-black vote, and often, they receive but 10% or less of the black vote.

As well, the question this year in Maryland is how much better Mr. Steele will do with blacks, but will he do worse with non-blacks. The last time I saw a breakout, his numbers with Asians weren't good - but they're a relatively small community. He was holding his own with Hispanics. But he was only getting 54% of the white vote. That's rough.

Because there are nearly 2.5 times more white voters than black voters, the loss of, say, 5% of the white vote would require an additional 12% - 13% of the black vote to make up for it.

It's an interesting race.

Dear Bigg Red,

I agree with you about the ads. The Steele ads are imaginative and creative, and have the right touch of whimsy and humor. Even the ad I cite here.

I do remember Mrs. Sauerbrey, and the Baltimore City precincts coming in at the very last moment to put Mr. Glendening over the top. The funny thing was that some of those Baltimore precincts were reporting voter turnout in excess of 100%.

But that wasn't enough to get the corrupt Maryland judges to open a full investigation. Go figure.

Mr. Steele will have to win by by at least a spread of a percent or two (25,000 - 50,000) to prevent the machine of the Party of Satan from stealing the [another] election. Baltimore City fraud can easily handle 5,000 - 10,000 votes.

He was in Baltimore, and later in Largo, Md. Here is the perspective of the Baltimore Sun reporter:

http://news.pajamasmedia.com/sport/2006/10/17/11416898_Steele_calls_in_.shtml

---sniip---

"I have a friend with me who knows what 'Only in America' means," Steele said, referring to King's favorite catch-phrase, a slogan that also hung around his neck yesterday in the form of some serious bling, the words emblazoned in diamonds. "I've got a friend who understands what it is like to not only pull himself up by his bootstraps, but, like Thurgood Marshall told us, to reach back and help others."

Maryland Democrats said Steele should be ashamed of himself and were quick to note that King and Steele grew close while campaigning around the country for President Bush two years ago.

"Don King is nothing but a publicity stunt, and that's all that Michael Steele has," said state Democratic Party spokesman David Paulson. "He's certainly not talking about issues."

Neither was King yesterday. As dozens of city residents gathered to catch a glimpse of him, King said nothing about increasing the minimum wage, improving access to health care, public safety improvements or job creation, matters that could improve their everyday lives.

"You want no pie in the sky when you die, you want something sound on the ground when you're around," King said. "A vote for Steele is history."
