NEW YORK -- Civil rights lawyer Lynne Stewart was sentenced to 28 months in prison in federal court in Manhattan Monday. She was convicted of providing support to terrorists by helping a jailed Egyptian sheik communicate with his followers on the outside.
Before sentencing, her lawyer told the judge that any prison sentence for Stewart would be a death sentence because of her serious health problems.
Stewart pleaded with the judge to allow her to live out the rest of her life "productively, lovingly, righteously.''
Assistant US Attorney Andrew Dember rejected defense suggestions that Stewart's conduct was judged differently after
9-11.
"This case had nothing to do with September 11,'' Dember told the judge. "What she was doing was smuggling terrorism messages and smuggling out Abdel-Rahman's responses.''
When Stewart arrived at the courthouse this morning, about 150 supporters chanted "Free Lynne, Free Lynne.''
Federal prosecutors say she had released a statement by Omar Abdel-Rahman, a blind sheik sentenced to life in prison after he was convicted in plots to blow up five New York landmarks and assassinate Egypt's president.
The Republicans should make a HUGE campaign issue over this immediately. This kind of judicial behavior is totally unacceptable. It is hard to tell whose behavior is more treasonous, Stewart's or the judge's.
Semper Fi
Nothing to do with 9/11?
OBL read and copied the Fatwa that Stewart smuggled out of the jail.
OBL finished the job that Stewart's client started.
How is it possible that this had nothing to do with 9/11? That just doesn't make any sense.
wow, great job judge! This person should be fried, or better yet hung.
(b) Appeal by the Government. The Government may file a notice of appeal in the district court for review of an otherwise final sentence if the sentence
(1) was imposed in violation of law;
(2) was imposed as a result of an incorrect application of the sentencing guidelines;
(3) is less than the sentence specified in the applicable guideline range to the extent that the sentence includes a lesser fine or term of imprisonment, probation, or supervised release than the minimum established in the guideline range, or includes a less limiting condition of probation or supervised release under section 3563 (b)(6) or (b)(11) [1] than the minimum established in the guideline range; or
(4) was imposed for an offense for which there is no sentencing guideline and is plainly unreasonable.
If, as stated by some of the other posters here, there is no specific minimum sentence in this case, the government could try to appeal this horrible miscarriage of justice under subsection (4) as being "plainly unreasonable."
So, there's some hope that she'll die in the ensuing 28 months? We can all hope. She's a commie/anti American/defender of the rotten/witch.
She and her cohorts have long been honored in my tagline.
Government investigators searching Stewart's law offices found a draft of the sheikh's fatwa that bin Laden later said inspired him.[14] In it, Abdel Rahman enjoined his fellow Muslims everywhere to kill Americans, even children, "to treat them with brutality," and to "drown their ships, shoot down their airplanes, kill them on earth, in the sea or in the sky, kill them everywhere you find them" in order to obtain his release from U.S. prison.[15]
One of the most incendiary communications was a message Stewart herself gave to the Reuters news service in June 2000 in which the sheikh announced his withdrawal of support for a cease-fire between the Egyptian Islamic Group and the Egyptian government.[12] The truce had been in place since 1997, just after his followers in Egypt had opened fire on tourists at the Temple of Hatshepsut in Luxor, killing 58 foreigners and 4 Egyptians.[13] Subsequently, high-casualty Islamist terrorism resumed in Egypt on October 7, 2004, with a series of bombings that killed 34 in and around the Egyptian Sinai resort of Taba. On July 23, 2005, three bombs exploded in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, killing at least 64.
Good info BUMP!
Wonder if the judge will recieve an allowance from George Soros?
Typical leftists helping each other.
She should be tried for treason.
The FBI translator on the Stewart case was related to the Coptic family that was murdered in Jersey City. Do you remember that incident and do you have any links to it?
......her lawyer told the judge that any prison sentence for Stewart would be a death sentence ......
So we get a twofur.
I'll bet she gets rich from the clients sher lines up from the inside. I wonder if her lawyer will insist on getting a cut?
What a travesty. Can't say I'm surprised though.
With a kisser like that she ought to get at least 5 years.
I haven't actually managed to follow that case as I should, but here are a few links:
