An excellent movie.
a great movie. if you like this genre, don't forget the new "Horatio Hornblower" series starring Ioan Greunfeld (or however you spell it)
3 of these things are not like the other, 3 of the things are kinda the same. Can you guess which three do not belong here?
Hold the phone...
Pretty good movie, great books.
IIRC, in the book Master and Commander Jack Aubry did just that, albeit in the face of overwhelming force.
Go to any service academy football game and watch a thousand or more young Jack Aubreys march into the stadium. Concepts such as duty, honor, teamwork and leadership are still alive and well at some places in our society.
There was a brief mention in an enthusiast magazine [for the life of me, can't remember the title, but it's been within the last few months] to the effect that Russell Crowe recently paid a quiet 'look-see' visit to the sailing ship used to film the movie. The ship's museum staff were delighted to give him a tour, said the article, and in the process he is reported to have told them that there is a sequel in the works. Anybody else heard this?
You bet it is.
Literally. You bet your survival and that of your children on your ability to comprehend this basic fact.
Do not trust your security, that of your family, or that of your nation to those who do not understand just how dangerous and tough the world is. It is all too easy to forget from the comfort of one's soft bed, well stocked kitchen, luxurious movie theatres, or lavish cocktail parties.
Those lounging in the baths of the decadent Leftist enclaves of America are having fun, no doubt, but they are deep in the delusion that, through their example, they can convert the world from a dangerous and tough place into one that is safe and gentle, where everyone accepts their ideals, where the fun of decadence will eradicate the danger and toughness of the world.
Such people are the greatest danger of all in a dangerous and tough world.
It is such decadence that will surrender the safety and gentleness that is also a part of the world to the dangerous and tough.
But I don't WANT John Wayne. I want THIS. And I don't care whether he passes the "can he drag a woman by the hair across Ireland" test. Leave my Keanu alone.
Actually, IBM used use 12 O'Clock High to demonstrate types of leadership. Great movie. I love what they can do with CGI nowadays, but I hope they NEVER remake 12 O'Clock High!
We have our own copy and watch it about once per year. This movie is a genuine depiction of life on the high seas at that time in history when the British Navy was shaping the modern world -- see book of that name by Arthur Hermann, another fine read.
Loved the movie and loved the music from the movie....
Pictures, please. Any picture of Russell Crowe would suffice...
DiCaprio was not a "weak sister" in either Gangs of New York nor Departed.
I teach a course at Penn State called "Leadership Studies in Popular Film." I haven't seen (all of) Master and Commander, but here's a link to one of my course pages that includes a partial list of the films I've used in class:

Most movies today offer us pabulum and fantasy.
I guess this guy didn't see Jackass - Number Two
