A political action committee created by the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, whose financial accountability has been challenged by MCDC members, has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations to support Republican candidates -- much of it through private companies with ties to conservative activist Alan Keyes.
Claiming access to 500,000 households nationwide, the Minuteman PAC has pledged to do what it can financially to help elect "committed and principled conservative leaders" -- citing as examples MCDC President Chris Simcox and Mr. Keyes.
"Our intent is to secure our borders, and we are hoping to influence the elections to get that done," said Rick Shafton, a political consultant in Sparta, N.J., who recently signed on as spokesman for the Minuteman PAC. "The Minuteman movement has proven to be very popular across the country, and it is raising a lot of money."
According to the most recent Federal Election Commission (FEC) records, the Minuteman PAC spent $240,000 through the first week of September on eight congressional campaigns, although just $5,000 was direct candidate contributions.
The FEC records also show that about 60 percent of the Minuteman PAC's expenditures through early September went to private companies -- several with ties to a labyrinth of Virginia-based tax-exempt charities and fundraising groups founded or headed by Mr. Keyes. The money was used for direct-mail fundraisers, telemarketing programs, advertising campaigns and disbursement fees for four candidates.
The Minuteman PAC spent nearly $88,000 through early September on its own operations, including fees to many of the Keyes-aligned private firms to collect and disburse donations and do direct-mail fundraising, the FEC records show. Other PAC money went to Web site construction, bank charges, salaries and advertising.

Really? If you donated to a PAC to support anti-illegal immigration candidates, and then learned that the PAC had spent exactly 2% of your money to support such candidates, you'd think your money was "well spent?"
You must not think the people you're talking to are particularly bright.
If MM donors do hold such an opinion, it can only be because they don't know the facts that Seper has uncovered. One obvious solution to that problem is have a group of people who are irritated by this crap kick in a few bucks each, buy the Keyes mailing list (now thoroughly devalued by having been shopped to every organization in town), and send said donors a copy of Seper's articles.
Pray continue to spin and obfuscate. Other useful ideas will no doubt come to mind...
If I was a donor, I'd consider my money to have been well-spent.
I'm sure some of the donors are getting exactly what they knew they were paying for - and it sure isn't a fence or border security.
Certainly.
You know, it wouldn't actually take all that large of a group to do this.
But, don't let the facts get in the way of your attacks.
According to the most recent Federal Election Commission (FEC) records, the Minuteman PAC spent $240,000 through the first week of September on eight congressional campaigns, although just $5,000 was direct candidate contributions.
Actually, at one time I thought you were. Mea Culpa.
EV, as if you would recognize intelligence if it fell on you like a lead brick. LOL!
And Bob, fyi, NO, EV is not "a nice guy". Just check out his posting history - the ones that haven't been pulled that is. Don't forget to review his position on things and his "circle of friends" as well. Birds of a feather and all that.
IT on the other hand is an intelligent and decent man who deserves respect and who I am proud to have in my own circle of friends. He'll never get respect from EV because you can't really teach or explain respect to someone who has never earned it on their own. We're all smart enough not to expect decency from EV.
Your posts consistently assume that I care what you think of me. That's actually not the case.
Nevertheless, I'm delighted to offer you a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to become a founding member of the Inform the Donors Foundation. Yes, for just $25, you can us help us tell conservative contributors exactly where their money goes and how it's used. We'll keep you up to date on our activities via frequent emails and newsletters, and also put you in touch with the wider conservative fundraising community.
And hey, even if only 50 cents of your donation winds up going towards our stated purpose, I'm certain you'll agree that the money was well spent.
Is Keyes running for something that I missed?
You can either: 1) produce documentation that $625 is the maximum allowed for the supported candidates, 2) admit that the PAC limits weren't reached and you're just blowing more smoke, or 3) try to change the subject again.
Personally, I'm going with door number three.
And there we have it. The nutshell.
Oh, he's still doing that; he's perfectly capable of doing two things at once, unlike some.
And at least you acknowledge that he HAD, your word, those days; you've never wasted your time going after liberals, only conservatives who don't hire you.
What the hell kind of argument is that?
As long as the suckers don't mind, you'll gladly take their money?
I think that's just what Harry Reid said until somebody found out about his land deals.
Madam, remind me not to annoy you. :)
LOL.
Hey, tell me where to send the money!
He may have to.
The Keyes Mafia drank deeply of the funds generated by his 2000 presidential run, but then came a long dry spell. Staffers were let go, not all of whom were paid for their work. Relief appears to have arrived in the form of Keyes' hopeless 2004 Senate run.
Since then, the raging thirst of these intertwined organizations has been slaked at the fountain of the Minutemen. That source is likely to dry up in the wake of Seper's revelations and/or eventual legal disclosure requirements, EV's most fervent efforts notwithstanding.
The beast must drink, or it will die.
Where in God's world is it mandated that a PAC can only give 1/8 of 2 percent to any given candidate?
Feed me, Seymour!
Pile on bump
I'm assuming it is more than $625. Of course, we're also assuming the $5000 was evenly divided by the 8 candidates. For all we know $4993 was given to the "Keyes 2008" campaign and one dollar to the other candidates.
"...and that if they want to impact a race beyond that, they have to spend their money on independent expenditures."
Careful, you're perilously close to admitting illegal in kind donations.
