Israel president has raped, say police

ISRAEL police say they have enough evidence to indict President Moshe Katsav on charges of rape, sexual harassment and wire-tapping, in the latest blow to the country's beleaguered leadership.

Mr Katsav, who is due to open the new session of Parliament today, is immune from prosecution as holder of the largely ceremonial post of president but could face impeachment by the Knesset.

"There is sufficient evidence indicating that in several cases ... the president carried out acts of rape, forced sexual acts, sexual acts without consent and sexual harassment,'' police said in a statement.

"There is sufficient evidence indicating violation of the law banning wire-tapping by the president,'' they said following a meeting with investigators and Attorney General Menachem Mazuz.

Mr Katsav, who has denied the allegations and says he is the victim of a "witch-hunt,'' could face between three and 16 years in prison if convicted, Israeli radio reported today.

The charges are the most serious faced by an Israeli leader, although several other top figures, including former prime minister Ariel Sharon, have faced probes into allegations of corruption.

In recent weeks, police have investigated no fewer than 10 complaints of rape and sexual harassment by former employees of Mr Kastav during his presidency and as tourism minister.

Someone already beat me to it, but here goes:

All he needs to do is change is name to 'Klintoon' and the rape allegations will magically vanish....

...at least it works that way in the good old US of A...

Some people are more equal than others in the Socialist world.

Clinton would have been no more than a two-bit gang thug punk if not for Liberal Media and the financial support of foreign enemies.

Israel's leadership is corrupt and morally feckless. The government still has not tendered its resignation. Every one of the politicians ought to be put on trial and barred from holding public office for life.

Immunized, as usual. In the same way the sycophants point out how the Clintons has remained married despite their problems unlike all those divorced Republicans, these same sycophants will point out how the Israeli president has been arrested and charged with rape while Bill Clinton has been the victim of false allegations that no prosecutor has ever seriously considered worthy of investigating.

I've read bits and pieces of this story in recent months and I get the impression that Katsav went after the women who were accusing him and sent people around to make threats.

It was very much a Clinton-style intimidation campaign against his accusers but the police couldn't be bought in this case.

They at least got the goods but whether Israel's Attorney General (who is appointed by judges, not the prime minister)chooses to act on the evidence remains to be seen.

All Katsav need do is join the democratic party, and move to the United States.

I am sure he saw the likes of bubba floating around, and watched how the dems never took anything he did in regards to sexual assault seriously.

This is confusing. First the author says:

"Mr Katsav, who is due to open the new session of Parliament today, is immune from prosecution as holder of the largely ceremonial post of president but could face impeachment by the Knesset."

Then he says:

"Mr Katsav, who has denied the allegations and says he is the victim of a "witch-hunt,'' could face between three and 16 years in prison if convicted, Israeli radio reported today."

So, it leaves me wondering whether he faces jail time or not.

First of all, he never had sex with that woman and, second of all, it was consensual.

"So, it leaves me wondering whether he faces jail time or not"

He is immune from prosecution WHILE he is president. He won't be president forever, and he could be impeached over this, which would make him available for prosecution quickly.

I think his immunity ceases the minute he's out of office, which creates an unfortunate incentive for him not to resign, when obviously he should. Israel doesn't need this sort of distraction right now.
