Aide says White House mocked evangelicals
The Guardian ^ | October 14, 2006 | Julian Borger

Posted on 10/15/2006 7:25:44 PM PDT by rakovsky

A former senior presidential aide has accused the Bush administration of using evangelical Christians to win votes but then privately ridiculing them once in office. The allegations by David Kuo, the former deputy director of the White House office of faith-based initiatives, come at a devastating time, when the administration is counting on born-again Christians to vote in sufficient numbers to save the Republicans' hold on Congress in the November elections.

In a book entitled Tempting Faith: an Inside Story of Political Seduction, to be published on Monday, Mr Kuo portrays the Bush White House's commitment to evangelical causes as little more than a cynical facade designed to win votes.

"National Christian leaders received hugs and smiles in person and then were dismissed behind their backs and described as ridiculous, out of control, and just plain goofy," Mr Kuo wrote, according to MSNBC television, which obtained an early copy of the book. In particular, he quotes Karl Rove, the president's long-serving political adviser and mentor, as describing evangelical Christians as "nuts".

Pat Robinson

I think it's Pat Robertson, and I have to admit I cringe sometimes when interjects himself into some issues.

I don't think so.

I have never seen the equivalent. Democrats are a "consensus" party. the are all unrelated grousp that form an agenda based on all the random demands.

Republicans hold out a idea of attracting people based on core beliefs.

This is why Foley the republican is asked to resign but Foley the democrat (studds who sodomized a 16 year old) is reelected.

Hardly the same as Jessie Jackson or Clinton's crocodile tears at ron brown's funeral.

re: just another attempt to depress voter turnout.)))

Yep--but I was reminded a little of David Frum. He managed to turn his job at the WH into a book to feather his own literary nest--and got turned out by the WH.

Now he's head of National Review Online. Where there are no evangelicals, interestingly enough.

I get regularly annoyed by the rightwing publisher's refusal to have any evangelical writers. Catholics, Jews, Anglicans--but no evangelicals. I guess Baptists can vote, but they can't read or write.

Snobs.

Then there's the Krauthammers, who claim that they don't even vote, so conservatives shouldn't have to listen to them.

Canadian snob.

I find the election season fascinating. There are SO many people that suddenly pop up that I haven't seen around here before. You don't notice it as a lurker, but you sure notice it once you join up.

I agree this book is timed to try and reproduce 1996 when christian types stayed home.

THERE IS AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE HERE!!!! Turnout is now EVERYTHING.

The democrats knwo that under the BEST situation their turnout can never ever match the conservative turnout.

The Republican Party treats the Evangelicals like the Democratic Party treats Blacks.

Sounds like some of your furniture upstairs was rearranged or Repossessed!

Awesome analogy. The parallel is revealing.

We already are and the election is still 23 days away.

Between now and election day, Free Republic should be as tolerant of trolls as DU is of us, every day of the year.

I have never been tolerated over there beyond one very polite response.

I doubt that there exists a single vote-rich constituency that does not go through periods of feeling used for political purposes, betrayed, or taken for granted. It goes with the territory.

This fellow did strike me as naive and expecting that far too much could be accomplished in far too little time.
