SEVEN in 10 voters believe John Howard will win a fifth successive election next year, a new poll has found.

Only one in five predict a victory for Labor, according to an ACNielsen poll published in Fairfax newspapers today.

This is a higher proportion of voters forecasting a coalition win than at any time in the three previous election campaigns – despite successive polls putting Labor ahead.

The poll of 1400 people, conducted between October 5 and 7, has Labor eight points ahead of the coalition on a two-party preferred basis by 54 per cent to 46 per cent.

After health, industrial relations is the main reason the Howard government is trailing Labor, the poll has found. However, the IR changes are a much higher concern to Labor voters, at 29 per cent, than coalition voters (6 per cent).

Federally, it's up to the Prime Minister of the day to call the election. The last one was October 11, 2004. The next one is due around about this time next year.
