Hefley risks GOP hold on Colorado seat
THE WASHINGTON TIMES ^ | October 15, 2006 | Valerie Richardson

Republican state Sen. Doug Lamborn's fiercest opponent in the 5th District race isn't his Democratic foe. It's the Republican he's trying to succeed -- 10-term Rep. Joel Hefley.

Mr. Lamborn is running neck and neck with Democrat Jay Fawcett ...

Shortly after Mr. Lamborn won a six-candidate primary on Aug. 8, Mr. Hefley, who is retiring, said he would refuse to endorse the Republican candidate, pointing to what he described as his "sleazy, dishonest campaign."

That stinging rebuke, coming from the highly regarded Mr. Hefley, delivered a devastating blow to Mr. Lamborn's candidacy. Several other prominent Republicans soon joined Mr. Hefley in refusing to endorse Mr. Lamborn, pointing to ads and mailings they say unfairly demonized his Republican foes.

One flier, sent out by the local Christian Coalition, accused fellow Republican Jeff Crank of supporting "the radical homosexual agenda."

Radio and television ads produced by the Club for Growth accused Mr. Crank, who was Mr. Lamborn's chief rival for the nomination, of supporting tax increases.

Mr. Lamborn has insisted he had no control over the content of the disputed materials because they were put out by independent political committees, not his campaign.

"Unfortunately, Mr. Hefley is not revealing that the ads he disagreed with were run by third-party groups that I had nothing to do with," Mr. Lamborn said Friday.

Meanwhile, Mr. Fawcett has taken full advantage of the internecine squabble, running newspaper ads last week listing state Republican leaders under the headline, "None of These Republicans Will Endorse Doug Lamborn for Congress."

Mr. Hefley responded Friday with a statement stressing that he would not support Mr. Fawcett, either, but repeating his earlier remarks about Mr. Lamborn.

"I do not endorse liberal Democrats, and I regard Jay Fawcett as a liberal Democrat,"

If he was in office for ten terms, he must have been doing something beside sending out form letters and not returning calls.

"The whole thing is sour grapes on Hefley's part. He owned his district and he handpicked Jeff Crank to succeed him"

You are spot on. It reminds me of a child throwing a temper tantrum but with greater consequences. As stated on many other threads, if the republican turn out is high, this seat will be retained by the GOP.
Overall, I think the GOP has done a crappy job in CO this election cycle. The governship will go to the Dem though I doubt anyone would believe Owens was a conservative so maybe we won't be able to tell the difference.

As a generality, most house districts are gerrymandered.

You need to try and do it before you say that

I can only speak on my personal experience...no phone calls returned. Unfortunately, I had to go to Salazar to get information on my request.

Then the GOP needs to do a hell of a lot better job of getting the information out...

No, Lamborn was the nastiest and most brutish violator of the 11th commandment in the 6-way primary. I'll vote for him to keep the seat, but on Wednesday Nov 8th, I'm gonna start working to dump him next time around. A lot of dishonesty in his campaigning. Made me embarrassed to be a Republican.

Also, I see Duncan Bremer has signs up (lost in the primary, took the high road, never said anything bad about any Republican). Obviously he's trying for a write-in campaign, which will further fracture the vote. Lamborn is running against Paul Fawcett in November, a former Air force career officer in this very, very military town. He campaigns acting like a moderate pro-security conservative. Lamborn may have screwed this up badly, a lot of people who agree with him on the issues will no longer shake his hand. He's a man with little to recommend him in the domain of "character.'

Hef is a jerk -- just mad because his staffer isn't getting the job -- that's a poor attitude. Hef ran an out of date office -- didn't even get email until about a year ago. This very conservative district will not elect a liberal -- my prediction.

I'll make a deal with you.

I will give you $200 for every link, that you provide, to a credible source that says that the majority of the House districts are not gerrymandered.

" the GOP has done a crappy job in CO this election cycle..."

Last cycle, we lost the federal senate seat to one Salazar and a R congressional seat to another Salazar.

Not even mentioning the state houses...

No leadership in the state party.

Just personalities

Turnip truck? Not at all. In fact, I didn't ever expect you to consent. I was just trying to poke you with a stick to get you say what you really were thinking. Which you did.

In a district that is 2 to 1 republican and carried twice by Bush at 65%, there exists a problem that no one wants to acknowledge.

You need to acquaint yourself with the rules used for re-districting
every ten years after the census and the topography and population
centers of the Colorado before you can claim gerrymandering.

A congressional district is not supposed to even 50 - 50 Democrat - republican.

First the number of seats in the house are fixed.
the state is apportioned by total population which determine the number of congressional districts.

Then what is foremost is that it be a community of interest which start with counties and cities.

Each political party develops a plan.
This is followed by a legislature review
and if no compromise it then goes to the courts.

The last gerrymandering occurred in the south (I think it was Georgia)
where black congressional districts were created along the lines of Race
by the Democrats.

They were later determined to be un-constitutional.
