Hefley risks GOP hold on Colorado seat
THE WASHINGTON TIMES ^ | October 15, 2006 | Valerie Richardson

Republican state Sen. Doug Lamborn's fiercest opponent in the 5th District race isn't his Democratic foe. It's the Republican he's trying to succeed -- 10-term Rep. Joel Hefley.

Mr. Lamborn is running neck and neck with Democrat Jay Fawcett ...

Shortly after Mr. Lamborn won a six-candidate primary on Aug. 8, Mr. Hefley, who is retiring, said he would refuse to endorse the Republican candidate, pointing to what he described as his "sleazy, dishonest campaign."

That stinging rebuke, coming from the highly regarded Mr. Hefley, delivered a devastating blow to Mr. Lamborn's candidacy. Several other prominent Republicans soon joined Mr. Hefley in refusing to endorse Mr. Lamborn, pointing to ads and mailings they say unfairly demonized his Republican foes.

One flier, sent out by the local Christian Coalition, accused fellow Republican Jeff Crank of supporting "the radical homosexual agenda."

Radio and television ads produced by the Club for Growth accused Mr. Crank, who was Mr. Lamborn's chief rival for the nomination, of supporting tax increases.

Mr. Lamborn has insisted he had no control over the content of the disputed materials because they were put out by independent political committees, not his campaign.

"Unfortunately, Mr. Hefley is not revealing that the ads he disagreed with were run by third-party groups that I had nothing to do with," Mr. Lamborn said Friday.

Meanwhile, Mr. Fawcett has taken full advantage of the internecine squabble, running newspaper ads last week listing state Republican leaders under the headline, "None of These Republicans Will Endorse Doug Lamborn for Congress."

Mr. Hefley responded Friday with a statement stressing that he would not support Mr. Fawcett, either, but repeating his earlier remarks about Mr. Lamborn.

"I do not endorse liberal Democrats, and I regard Jay Fawcett as a liberal Democrat,"

Interesting you say that because I believe that Colorado is the next California for the GOP. Within a few election cycles Colorado will be as far out of reach as CA is for hte GOP

" Within a few election cycles Colorado will be as far out of reach as CA ..."

Maybe sooner than that.

Sad.

When I moved here 35 years ago

The most popular bumper sticker was:

Please don't Californicate Colorado

In a house district that has been gerymandered 2 to 1 for the GOP, its hard to see how any republican could lose to a dem.

Apparently there are some republican voters who, like Hefley, are not happy with what went on in the primary.

Its just like the AZ 8th.

Except in this CO district, the pub hasn't lost, he is only threatened.

While CO has had somewhat of a liberal streak (Gary Hart, Gov Lamm, Pat Schroeder) CO was one of only a 2-3 states where GW Bush did worse in 2004 than in 2000 (GW Bush got 52% in 2004 and 51% in 2000, so his % went up but CO was 4 point more GOP than the national vote in 2000, while in 2004 it was only 1 point more GOP)

Hispanics and Californians moving to CO are tipping the state to the left.

Three states that currently are GOP in Prez elections are at risk of going to the DEMS: VA, CO, NV

While three others that usually vote DEM are becoming more competitive for the GOP Prez candidates: WI, MN, OR

WV: A state that voted for Carter in 1980 and Dukakis in 1988, is now solidly GOP at the Prez level. We are only a few cycles away from having 2 GOP Senators from WV

The 2008 Senate races in CO will almost certainly be won by Udall.

This has been going on since right after the primary and lots of people have talked to Hefley. He knows it was 527 groups with the bad ads and not Lamborn.

The whole thing is sour grapes on Hefley's part. He owned his district and he handpicked Jeff Crank to succeed him.

When the people wanted the more socially conservative Lamborn Hefley got his knickers in a twist. If Hefley can't have his boy in his seat he'd rather have a Democrat in it.

Makes me regret the 10 votes I gave Hefley over the past 20 years.

In a house district that has been gerymandered 2 to 1 for the GOP,

Why do you believe that ?

Have you ever done a re-districting ?

How WV has two DUmmie Senators is amazing.

I guess politics are local...or just loco.

The DUmies may have their national convention in Denver...yekes!

The Colorado R party has been killing itself. Our governor has not been a party leader.

McInnis has been 99 percent silent. He could have had any job that he wanted...Senator, Governor.

plus there is more.

WV went for Bush because of his position on mountain top coal mining, an enviro issue.

Clinton stabbed them in the back. Although Gore took the same position as Bush, WV didn't believe him.

WV will eventually elect GOP Senators....Remember southern states began voting GOP in 1972 (took a break in 1976), but it wasnt until 1994 that GOP Senators were in the majority throughout the South. By 2016, WV will have 2 GOP Senators

Hefley is a classic example of why many have called the GOP the "stupid" party.
