Hawaii is in the Pacific Ocean, I think.

Hopefully it wasn't quite that bad. I was planning on a vacation there soon.

Mine said the same. They've been SMSing and now got through on a mobile. Power still out and no one can get in hotel rooms if they left because of the power key card things. They aren't hanging up cause they want to hear what we are hearing here or on the USGS site since they can only hear things from the hotel and local people working with all the residents and guests since no one can get news, etc.

They also said while the hotel was trying to get people out on the golf course that half were doing what they were being told and half were running up the stairs (obviously more concerned about tsunami vs. continued quakes and the building being checked)

Ironically, I had a flood in my house so they had just been trying to call me checking on damage here and then had the earthquake and phones went down.

Maui has an excellent tsunami warning system. If there was a danger, they'd be hearing sirens.

Just talked to my friend in Hawaii. She was out jogging and didn't feel a thing. She says power is out.

Lessons learned from the tsunami that wiped out HIlo in 1960, I think is was. The city was rebuilt 5 miles inland..

USGS moved the location a bit further south - to the West Flank of Mauna Loa - the most common location for large quakes on the Big Island.

Waikiki is a long ways away. Hopefully it won't.

You're welcome, myprecious. I've never been to the IRIS website before today. It's excellent. I check our Alaska Earthquake website at least once a day. Ever since the 7.9 quake that shook the area we live in, I keep tabs on what's shakin'. LOL http://www.aeic.alaska.edu/Seis/recenteqs/

Is there any chance
a wave could propagate east
and wash the debris

from Los Angeles
and San Francisco? That would
start the week off well . . .

My son just called from North Shore of Oahu and told us he felt the quake at 7:07 AM there. It registered 4.6 and the epicenter was on the Big Island, close to Hilo.

We stayed at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel located on the upper Ws of the Big Island (Kohala Coast) a few months ago. Darn close to those quakes. Not very populated up there; Kona is about 25 miles to the S and there are only about 6-8 hotels in that 25 mile distance. If you have google earth take a look at the Big Island. Very, very scary as all the island is is one giant volcano.
