Thanks everyone. He said his power is out and wondered about possible tsunami danger. I guess there is none.

My parents were told by hotel security to move inland, so I guess there is a tsunami warning. Kinda startling for my parents since we are from Illinois. My dad grew up in California so he's been in quite a few quakes. But my mom hasn't.

USGS has it pegged as a 4.6 (light). But it shook here in Hilo a good 30 secconds. Looks like it was felt across the state - my sister said the lights are out in Honolulu.
Had a smaller after shock of about 10 seconds. TV stations are on the air, but can't make some cell calls. Don't hear any sirens, but it scared the crap out of my cats....

I know I would get off the beach regardless of what they say if the earth shook under me.
Differing reports of 4.5 to 6.5.

but it scared the crap out of my cats.... Having stepped in a pile of dog poop early this morning, I sympathize with you.
Seriously, FOX is reporting multiple power outages. Stay safe!

The bulletin I got only covers Alaska and the West coast of the lower 48. The Pacific tsunami forecast center I believe is responsible for Hawaii. I would not rule out a tsunami unless they give the all clear. Better err on the side of caution.

4.9 according to AP.
If so, it's pretty small.

4.9 according to AP. If so, it's pretty small. According to my parents, power IS out on Maui.

We were talking to our son who is in Honolulu when he told us he felt it. He is on the 13th story of a hotel. He said the building was swaying. We lost telephone contact with him for awhile. When we made contact again a few minutes later he said the power went out for a bit.

There isn't much staff at NEIC on weekends or nights. I suspect the USGS number is too low - it's computer generated, and has NOT been reviewed by a human being - I think it mistakenly broke one big quake into two smaller quakes.

To: BunnySlippers
The 4.9 is almost certainly wrong. AP is quoting USGS NEIC, and the 4.9 is an automatic computer generated solution and has not been reviewed by a human sesimologist.

To: Dengar01
The USGS just updated the magnitude to M 6.3 - it's now been reviewed by a seismologist.
