There is an AFB there between Manua Loa and Manua Kea, its one of the few blurred out spots on Google earth, but thats the only military on the Big Island.

Given the pretty good distance of this quake from Maui I don't quite understand how the power outages can be so severe tehre.

Fox News was reporting "Three Distinct Quakes" in Hawaii today. Right now, they are showing video of people swimming on the beaches.

Fox's Hawaiian affiliate seems to be back up. Kona side is the most damaged; Fox affil still trying to get info, but announcer's husband is a pilot and they're just being told to report as normal.

It was off after the first two big ones where my parents are at in Lahaina. But there's been one also in Maui a bit later and it sounds like they're hearing more power is off since then (in other areas of Maui).

They were shocked the big ones weren't centered closer to Maui. They've been through 30 years of earthquakes in CA and said that these were the scariest quakes they've been through.

So perhaps the places that kept it after the first ones just couldn't when they had one that was actually centered nearer by, even if it were smaller? I don't know...just that they lost it immediately, at least in the area of Maui they are in.
