Praying for the safety of all in Hawaii. I was in the Loma Prieta quake back in '89. It was NOT a good time...convinced us to move back to the midwest.

And all 6.5 quakes are not created equal. This one was very shallow, which meant the movement on the surface would be more violent than if it had been deeper.

People trapped in elevators due to the island wide power outage. That would be spooky.

Particularly with the aftershocks. :(

I was just over in Hilo about 6 weeks ago, and in Kauai 3 weeks ago. I miss all the fun.

Hope everthing is good over there, I guess the saddle road is gonna be overloaded today.

old phone that is working

Everyone needs an old land line with cord that does not need an electrical boost. In case of power outage (thunderstorm, snow, hurricane, so on), it may be the only link to the outside world.

I just saw there was also a 3.1 one in Maui (14 miles from Lahaina) at 7:45 local time so that may factor in to the power situation, since it was down in some parts of Maui from the first one, but in apparently more areas now. Maybe? If it comes up (the webcam) would you post a link?

The aftershocks are the worst part. They totally mess with your head. Of course the helpful newspeople will continually remind them that this could actually have been a "preshock" with a larger one coming.

I had to unplug my TV after the Loma Prieta quake. And self medicate.

They also have to worry about this being a foreshock.

You never should let your guard down in quake country once it's over for at least several hours. There have been "strong" earthquakes, which turned out to be foreshocks for even larger ones. Prayers to those in Hawaii.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Wifey and I are gonna be near there in 3 weeks or so for a few days near Kailua.

Have an old co-worker that has lived there for years, Kamuela, and works at the Keck Observatory.

Hope all are well all around, that was a pretty good shake.

Fox is reporting three distinct earthquakes. I believe the reporter mentioned "we still think it is a 6.9"; don't know what he meant by that.

Kona appears to have taken the brunt of the quake. Kona Community Hospital reported structural damage and multiple landslides were reported on the Hamakua Highway, officials said.

Callers from the Big Island told KITV that the shaking was so strong that people were knocked to the ground.

The state Department of Transportation announced at about 8:30 a.m. that it closed all state airports.

I don't have the foggiest idea where Fox got the 6.9 from.

There have been reports of structural damage, broken glass, etc. With the power out, it's going to take a while to figure out the extent of the damage. There also might be debris in roads, cracks, sinkholes. It is nothing to be taken lightly until the facts are in.
