Downtown Hilo begins right on the water, only about 100 yards inland.

Major earthquake rocks Islands

Updated at 8:30 a.m., Sunday, October 15, 2006

By Catherine E. Toth
Advertiser Staff Writer

A 6.5-magnitude earthquake shook homes and took out power across the state Sunday morning, according to a bulletin issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

It occurred six miles north-northwest of South Kona, Hawaii at 7:08 a.m. Sunday.

The earthquake was felt as far away at Lihue, Kauai, with many areas experiencing strong shaking.
No tsunami is expected.

On O'ahu there were reports of power outages all over O'ahu, from Hawai'i Kai to Kane'ohe to Kalihi Valley.

The Honolulu Fire Department is reporting that people are trapped in elevators due to the island-wide power outage.

Does anybody know the where abouts of Karl Rove? Certainly he was behind this to shift the national attention away from the Foley nonsense.

6.5 is little?

6.5 is big. The early reports have been updated.

We've got power in Hilo, except for some of the traffic lights, but no TV or radio. No reports on tsunami.....that would have happened right away. The quake seems to occurred inland and a worst case would be a lava bench dropping off the island creating a local seismic sea wave.

Mauna Loa has been inflating for years now and something had to give.

Downtown Hilo begins right on the water

That park along the shoreline is where downtown Hilo USED to begin.

Amen.

People trapped in elevators due to the island wide power outage. That would be spooky.

I paged my CMC tech and they only lost power. They're phone systems are still up. Patient flow is not as bad either. If you know of anybody that needs to go to a hospital and you have the choice then have them go to CMC

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsus/Maps/HI2/19.21.-157.-155.php

shows two majors, just NNW of the coast, 150 miles from Honolulu. Lots of aftershocks. The big island is going to be a mess.

Spoke to my mom, South side of Oahu (Waikiki, Manoa, etc) is blacked out, noi phones, cellular is working.
