6.3 quake rattles Hawaii

HONOLULU - An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.3 struck Hawaii early Sunday morning, waking up residents and knocking out power.
The U.S. Geological Survey also reported several aftershocks, including one measuring a magnitude of 5.8. No damage reports were immediately available.
The quake occurred at 7:07 a.m. local time, 10 miles north-northwest of Kailua Kona, a town on the west coast of the Big Island, said Don Blakeman, a geophysicist at the National Earthquake Information Center, part of the U.S. Geological Survey.
Blakeman said researchers were still trying to ascertain how many aftershocks struck and how large.
Blakeman said there was no risk of a Pacific-wide tsunami, but a possibility of significant wave activity in Hawaii.
The quake occurred about 155 miles to the southeast of Honolulu, the state capital, in Oahu.

My sister-in-law in Waimea (hence my login name) called me in California. She and her family live on the Big Island just about 10 miles from the center. Everyone is okay, but said that all their TVs and refrigerator fell over - lots of glass. Say it's the largest quake they've ever felt (over 50 years. They feel isolated because no power or radio (radio stations and TV from oahu aren't getting through). Also their cell phones and telephones that require power aren't working. Luckily they have one old phone that is working, so I've been forwarding them news.

Kilauea is on the opposite side of the Big Island from this quake. This quake was on the western flank of Mauna Loa.
Kona appears to have taken the brunt of the quake. Kona Community Hospital reported structural damage and multiple landslides were reported on the Hamakua Highway, officials said.

DHS better start scrambling everything they have, including naval assets with relief supplies, before the media spins this into another Katrina.
