Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton called John McCain yesterday to personally apologize and denounce comments an adviser of hers reportedly made slamming the GOP senator over his time in captivity in Vietnam.
The move from one potential 2008 presidential candidate to another was sparked by a column in The New York Times, in which Maureen Dowd quoted an anonymous adviser talking about McCain's criticism of the Clintons over their North Korea position.
The adviser said Team Clinton thought McCain was doing the White House's dirty work by criticizing the Clintons and ended up "looking similar to the way he did on those captive tapes from Hanoi, where he recited the names of his crewmates."
That was a reference to an unsubstantiated rumor used to tar McCain, a Vietnam war hero, as off-kilter during the 2000 GOP presidential primary.
Aides to both senators said Clinton reached out to McCain to denounce the comments.
Clinton is said to have a good relationship with McCain, and her circle clearly wasn't pleased with the remarks.
Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson said, "These comments are reprehensible and they in no way reflect Senator Clinton's feelings."
McCain spokesman John Weaver replied, "Senator Clinton is correct, the remark was reprehensible."
Last week, McCain took what many saw as the first shot of the 2008 race, blasting Clinton for placing blame for North Korea's recent nuclear test on President Bush - and pointed to husband Bill's policies as a "failure."
Clinton has avoided directly criticizing McCain over those comments, instead taking aim at Bush and Republicans at large.

I'm sure she does. They are peas in a pod. One is the Democrat's problem, the other is ours.
They both will say anything, take any position, or screw anybody in order to advance themselves. Their party affiliations are flags of convenience, since they are beholden only to their own ambition.
Well isn't that special.
Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson said, "These comments are reprehensible
Let's see: A Republican politician or staffer makes a 'reprehensible' remark and the Dims will call for their resignation.
A Democrat politician or staffer makes a 'reprehensible' remark, and the Dims call for apologies.
A classic example of why liberals just cannot be taken seriously.
I fear the Hillary!/McCain or McCain/Hillary! "Fusion" ticket may be a real possibility.
Hillary Rodham lies as frequently as her (alleged) husband, the impeached and disbarred Bill Clinton; however
She's just not as good at it.
.
The White House? Part of that nasty ol' vast right wing conspiracy, I suppose.
The problem that Hillary and all politicos have is that sites like FR allows responses to everything the politicos do and say. I predicted awhile back that the growth in videos being built by regular folks will have a dramatic impact on politics and other things. Case in point, see this video on Hillary.
I think this is one reason google bought youtube, so they can control the political videos we will be seeing more and more of. They will be able to control youtube but that's about it. By the way, at some point googles stock will drop like a rock. Why? Because someone will come up with something that's much better and google won't be able to buy it. google bought youtube with stock by the way, so, essentially google didn't use a penny in real cash for youtube.
Got that right! McCain is a ego-maniacal phony, and Hillary reminds most men of their ex-wife and why they divorced them!
There is no one to root for in this fight.
That is a very well done video. Every one should turn up the volume and check it out.
FR should start a fundraising drive to expand to host short video clips - just political stuff, moderated like the threads are for content and copyright issues. the technology is trivial.
But did she fire the aide? Probably not, which means she actually agrees with what was said, but has to pretend otherwise for her political future.
And will any members of the MSM ask her if she fired the aide who leaked those statements? Hmmmm? That's what the RATs are looking for in the House.
Maybe it was Craig Livingstone.
By printing those comments, Maureen Dowd proves she is the scum of the Earth. If a regular news reporter printed them, that would be one thing, but putting them in an opinion column? Ugh.
