Rep. Murtha blasts GOP for name-calling
© 2006 The Associated Press
WASHINGTON - Rep. John Murtha, a decorated Marine veteran who favors withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq, wrote an essay for Sunday's Washington Post blasting Republicans for referring to him and other Iraq war opponents as "Defeatocrats."
In his opinion piece, first published on the Post's Web site Saturday night, Murtha, D-Pa., said Vice President Dick Cheney, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and others in the White House have called Iraq war opponents appeasers and pessimists and labeled Democrats the "cut and run" party.
"It's all baseless name-calling, and it's all wrong," Murtha wrote. "Unless, of course, being a Defeatocrat means taking a good hard look at the administration's Iraq policy and determining that it's a failure.
"In that case, count me in. Because Democrats recognize that we're headed for a far greater disaster in Iraq if we don't change course _ and soon. This is not defeatism. This is realism."
Murtha, a military hawk and close confidant of top military officials, surprised Washington last year when he called for pulling all troops out of Iraq within months.
At a GOP fundraiser in Milwaukee last month, Cheney accused Murtha of advocating a policy of retreat in the war against terrorism.
In the Post essay, Murtha wrote: "Democrats are fighting a war on two fronts: One is combating the spin and intimidation that defines this administration. The other is fighting to change course, to do things better, to substitute smart, disciplined strategy for dogma and denial in Iraq.
"That's not defeatism. That's our duty," Murtha wrote.

This is a good indicator that such an approach is working. They are Defeato-crats and Republicans would do well to trumpet even louder. Murtha must have some poll numbers that show him a little closer than he'd like. I have the feeling that some races are tightening like Murtha's as the GOP is ramping up the full court press in individual races. I may be wrong but I'd be surprised if Irey isn't giving Murtha a run for his money. I can say the same for Raj Bhakta against Allyson Schwartz. There is a reason Ms. Schwartz is behaving like she has a reason to run a campaign again. I noticed even that the venerable Senator Byrd seems to be waking up before the election since John Raese has made some very strategic attacks over this past month. I think Raese is a long shot but when politicians squirm publicly you can bet they have a reason to. The Democrats are not sitting as well locally as some are trying to play the numbers nationally.
If only this were true. This guy must live in a parallel universe.
Murtha is playing an old, old game. That is, call for withdrawal, then keep calling for withdrawal. Eventually, there will be some kind of withdrawal, and then he can say, "See, I was right, and I forced them to withdraw." So how long has he been saying that disaster will strike if we don't immediately start withdrawal? A year? More?
So do I, there isn't an article in the MSM that they don't get that line in and it's bogus.
Great post sleuth.
Me neither
He, and the rest of that crew...wouldn't waste a moment whining about so-called name calling if there wasnt a focus group somewhere that told them it was beginning to hurt them.
Whine, whine, whine. Sheesh. Just because we know Murtha is a worthless, cowardly loser is no reason for him to get all upset.
Defeatocrats is pretty good.
Hey, isn't that like, name calling?
snicker
"....Iraq war opponents appeasers and pessimists and labeled Democrats the "cut and run" party".
What else could they be called? But the following comment by Murtha really defines him and if the Democrats agree, defines the Democrats.
"In the Post essay, Murtha wrote: "Democrats are fighting a war on two fronts: One is combating the spin and intimidation that defines this administration. The other is fighting to change course, to do things better, to substitute smart, disciplined strategy for dogma and denial in Iraq.
"That's not defeatism. That's our duty," Murtha wrote".
Does this really discribes the Democrats, and is this really what they believe they are in Washington for?
I want all with this attitude to stand up and be counted! This really scares me! Treason is a word I use with with care, but this borders on it.
God Bless our men and women and keep them safe.
John Murtha is the world champ at looking like a crazed madman and a big baby...both at the same time.
Hope the Defeatocrats like Murtha go down in defeat.
Treasonocrats.
Of course the REAL way we know what a sissy crybaby he is, is...that he won't even debate a little bitty woman..
OH, no....he is too scaredy-cat to debate...but, the big war hero can write sob story editorials to the newspaper!!
Okey dokey! ;*)
That article wasn't biased at all. /sarcasm!!!
Don't those Republicans know that only Democrats are allowed to say horrible things about their political opponents?!
Murtha, D-Pa., said Vice President Dick Cheney, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and others in the White House have called Iraq war opponents appeasers and pessimists and labeled Democrats the "cut and run" party.
"It's all baseless name-calling, and it's all wrong,"
There is NOTHING baseless about the terms VP Cheney or SoD Rumsfeld said. Stop the lies Murtha! What a maroon this guy is.
