CA: Former President Clinton speaks to UCLA crowd about oil tax - Prop 87

Former President Bill Clinton was cheered Friday as he spoke to a university crowd in support of a California ballot measure that would tax oil to fund alternative energy research.

Clinton called Proposition 87 "California's way to energy independence."

The measure would tax companies drilling for oil in California until it has generated $4 billion. The money would be set aside for loans, grants and subsidies to promote alternative fuels and more energy-efficient vehicles.

"To save the planet, improve our national security and create the next generation of good jobs for the American people - that's what Prop 87 represents to me,' Clinton said at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Oil pumped in California accounted for 37 percent of the state's demand in 2005, according to the state Legislative Analyst's Office. Twenty-one percent of the state's oil comes from Alaska, while the rest is imported from abroad. The initiative would tax oil California producers between 1.5 percent and 6 percent depending on the per-barrel price of oil.

Opponents say oil companies that do business in California pay the fifth-highest taxes in the country, and adding another tax would deter them from pumping California oil and eventually lead to higher gas prices.

I don't mind that we buy consumer goods from foreign countries. That gives them healthy economies, and low prices for us. That doesn't make us dependent on foreign countries.
We can produce enough food to keep us with no problem - we might not have strawberries in Jan., but we won't go hungry.
We have plenty of clothes - most of us have crammed closets. And if you look at the labels, you will see a lot of different countries of origin.
The Japanese auto makers make a lot of cars here in the US.

The only area where we are not self-sufficient - and it's by choice - is oil.

If you are talking bare survival at a point in time, yes, we can survive. But I disagree that this is not a problem. Not only are we getting oil from the middle east but apparently it is aok to get natural gas from Australia and create new delivery methods via Mexico. Fewer and fewer items are being made in the U.S., making us more and more dependent, in general. We are letting this happen voluntarily, but only screaming about oil. I find that hypocritical.

We can do more than survive without imported manufactured goods. The only reason we buy them is because they are better quality and cheaper than domestic goods. And with an unemployment rate of 4.6%, we don't have a work force to make any more.

Our only foreign dependence is on oil - and that's our choice. A really dumb one, IMO.

So, all the libs are complaining about high gas prices and how it's Bush's fault, yet they want to increase gas taxes to make it more expensive, so they can blame that on Bush too?

If the voters pass it, every oil company operating in California needs to leave the state.

It is very difficult to be stupider that they are Sarge.

Even Bill is laughing up his sleeve about how stupid they are.

I for one will not be voting for it.

Okay, I'll play. Why will you vote for it? Do you think this is the proper use of legislation? What other causes would you wish to see funded and on what industry would you propose mandating taxes to pay for it?

I believe Bubba added 8 cents per gallon Fed Tax when he was in office. Obviously, it hurt the poorest and the older folks the most. He could care less. It was more money for the kitty.

Please ignore my last comment. My apologies!

Yes, boys and girls, we are going to tax our way to energy independence... Typical liberal solution...
Unfortunately for people in CA, it is tough get gas from any other state when prices go up. MA is considering a 9 cents per gallon tax hike. How many stations will there be on the border in NH, VT, RI and CT when that happens...

His sidekick, Al Gore has endorsed the Oil Tax in a commercial released in California. Hopefully, their combined endorsement will sink this wallet-soaking measure.

For rich liberals like Geena Davis, oh the added dollar at the pump won't hurt them in their gas-guzzling limos. They have plenty of disposable income that a hike in the tax isn't going to matter from their perspective. But its going to hurt working families all over California who've just gotten relief from this summer's $3.00 a gallon price at the pump. The Left would like to bring back those days fast. Now tell me why any one in the right mind would want to pay MORE just to drive their cars, SUVs and trucks on our highways.

If you don't pay $4.00 for gas, you aren't helping to reduce global warming. That must be why Gore is vouching for this punitive tax.

Its funny. No sooner do gas prices drop then liberals want to jack them right back up again. And if they don't go up, its all Bush's fault just as it was all Bush's fault when they didn't go down fast enough. I can't find a scorecard to keep track of all the stupid statements coming left and right from the idiots at UCLA.

Bubba knows how to charm a crowd. If it was filled with young females, the only thing missing was they hadn't serviced him. But they worship him like the Second Coming Of Jesus.
