SRC Bitterly Clashes Over Gay History Month
Philadelphia Evening Bulletin ^ | Jim McCaffrey

Posted on 10/13/2006 4:39:11 PM PDT by Kid Shelleen

If James Baldwin had been at the School Reform Commission meeting Wednesday, he might have taken the next plane back to Europe. If Bayard Rustin had witnessed the meeting, he might have wept. African-American speakers used the monthly SRC business meeting as a forum to crudely denounce the school district's designation of October as Gay and Lesbian History month. The incensed protestors shouted slurs at students and speakers, yelled for segregated schools that would exclude lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender children from the rest of the school population, and denounced Gay and Lesbian History month as a white oriented racist agenda. --- snip ---- Robert Gray, of the African American Freedom & Reconstruction League, launched perhaps the strongest attack. "We not only have the right but also a responsibility to set our own standards," his letter to the board read. "No white person can tell us what our standards are, the 'radical' or the 'right winged.

It is reassuring to learn that students will be learning about gay, lesbian et al history rather than wasting any time learning the history of the United States.

People have a right to hold different views on the morality of homosexuality. The schools should not be teaching propaganda promoting it.

If James Baldwin had been at the School Reform Commission meeting Wednesday, he might have taken the next plane back to Europe. If Bayard Rustin had witnessed the meeting, he might have wept.

And if Aaron Copland had been present, he might have tried to bugger half the men in the room, while playing Appalachian Spring on the accordian.

The last time I visited center city Philly, there were people from a radical black "church" handing out leaflets claiming that the CIA was secretly implanting black people with microchips. Racial politics is a big draw in a city that's becoming a decaying, corrupt shooting gallery. Interesting that the protestors didn't note that Philly is majority black, with a black mayor who pretty much does as he pleases.

Franny Breen, a teacher at G.W. Carver High School of Engineering and Science and a sponsor for the Gay-Straight Alliance at that school, responded, "Acknowledging Gay and Lesbian History Month on the school district calendar, is not about mandating a 'gay and lesbian curriculum' or about catering to some radical agenda. It is simply about acknowledging the fact that gay and lesbian people exist, and it is about supporting our students and teaching our students that all people matter."

Fanny seems to want us to think this is no big deal and to not worry about it.

In other words, she's asking us to shrug our shoulders.

I certainly won't!

"in the Gay struggle whites are the primary beneficiaries and blacks are on the bottom."

They may want to rephrase that.

This is far from the only reason to homeschool or, if that's not feasible, send the kids to a private school. But it does show that the public school system is incapable of cleaning its own house.

It's a major issue for many homeschoolers on FR, though not for all homeschoolers. (I live in a blue state, and approximately half of the homeschoolers here are left-leaning Democrats). But, these stories do illustrate how a powerful lobby can influence children through the school system, how it can squash the rights of parents to determine what their children learn.
