BBC News ^ | October 12, 2006 | Staff

A man has pleaded guilty to conspiring to murder people in terrorist campaigns in Britain and the US.

Dhiren Barot, of north London, planned to use a radioactive "dirty bomb" in one of a series of attacks in the UK, Woolwich Crown Court has heard.

He intended to cause "injury, fear, terror and chaos", the court was told.

Barot also plotted to carry out explosions in US cities that were "designed to kill as many innocent people as possible".

LONDON - A British man pleaded guilty Thursday to conspiring to bomb high-profile targets in the United States including the International Monetary Fund headquarters in Washington and the New York Stock Exchange.

"I plead guilty," Dhiran Barot, 32, said in a clear voice at Woolwich Crown Court in south London.

Other alleged targets in the plot, which was foiled by Barot's arrest in 2004, included the World Bank headquarters in Washington, the Citigroup building in New York and the Prudential building in Newark, N.J.

Prosecutor Edward Lawson said Barot planned "to carry out explosions at those premises with no warning. They were plainly designed to kill as may people as possible."

In Britain, Barot planned to pack gas cylinders into limousines and detonate them in underground parking garages, Lawson said.

This plan was "described by Mr. Barot as the main cornerstone of attacks planned to take place in the U.K.," Lawson said.

He said another plot involved the use of radioactive material in a rudimentary "dirty" bomb that would, cause "injury, fear, terror and chaos," although it was unlikely to kill anyone.

Lawson said plans outlining details of the "back-to-back" attacks had been found on a computer after Barot's arrest in August 2004.

Judge Neil Butterfield deferred sentencing of Barot but did not announce a date

Send him over to us, Ivan. We'll turn him into sausage, one limb at a time and make him eat the sausages.

Hey, maybe we can send him as a courier to take the airplane parts we are selling to Iran.

Thanks for posting the entire article.

A dirty bomb that's unlikely to kill anyone? Helluva weapon there, Dhiran.

Dear, there are just some situations where a rope and a sturdy tree will do. No, not a Tory Tree. ;)

My sentiments exactly.

IIRC the death penalty is completely abolished in Britain, am I right?

Let's hope they do. I'll be curious to see how he is ultimately punished. And how folks react to the news of his confession. Here in the States, I've heard that some UK folks who have lived among the Muslim immigrants and citizens so long and peacefully, are in denial about the intent of the terrorists. (Of course, we have that here, too...)

Maybe Barot is not Butterfield's dating type.

I think it's still in place for treason. Theoretically, we could hang him.

A good old fashioned public hanging would send the right message. Too bad the Tyburn tree is long gone.

I think if we give him therapy and offer rehabilitation, he'll no longer harbor criminal tendencies. I'm sure he just had a very bad childhood. After all, he's a "Muslim convert", and as we all know, Islam is the Religion of Peace.

(do I have to mention this is supposed to be sarcastic? or is everyone here on board?)

If we hanged him or shot him in the back of the head, we might scare the hell out of other little blighters because they just might consider the fact that they may be next, and we're just crazy enough and enraged enough to do it.

And I'm not being sarcastic. ;)

Did this Islamofascist Terrorist plan to get his uranium from Little Kim Chee? Or maybe he planned to buy one of Kim's small bombs.

Cheers to your new bombs!

I posted an article last week that said that radiological material had been "disappearing" as of late. Too bad that news was drowned out by Mark Foley.
