Dear Students:

First of all, I would like to thank each of you for signing up for my class this semester at UNC-Wilmington. Part of my job as your professor is to dispel certain myths you learn in your other classes, especially sociology. If you decide to question these myths in Sociology 101, your professor is likely to assign you to sensitivity training sessions.

Because our university faculty is so overwhelmingly liberal, many of these myths constitute arrogant dismissals of conservative ideas – ideas that your professors would take more seriously if they had a little more experience interacting with conservatives. Some of your professors have never met a conservative and could only spot one from a distance based largely on the conservative’s physical appearance and grooming habits.

In the famous 1925 Scopes “monkey” trial, Clarence Darrow stated: “For God’s sake, let the children have their minds kept open – close no doors to their knowledge; shut no door from them. Make a distinction between theology and science. Let them have both. Let them be taught. Let them both live.” Have you ever met a 21st Century liberal who believes that both evolution and creation should be taught in schools? Or do they say “Let them have only one”?

Can you name the 1981 Arkansas case in which the ACLU (the ones who brought us the Scopes case) argued that teaching both evolution and creation is actually in violation of the First Amendment?

IMHO he slipped up here. The ACLU didn't argue that teaching creation in a theology class was against the first amendment. "Taught in schools" is much different than "taught in the same class". It seems ol Mike has been taken in by the ID promoters.

That's a pretty big jump you're making there. I can't believe how some people can read a totally benign paragraph, filter it through their passions over a single issue, and make the paragraph say something it does not. (This goes for both sides of crevo, abortion, immigration - any hot button issue).

It is good to have passion, but sometimes passion makes us irrational; we see boogymen in every written word and every event (see yesterday's plane crash).

IMHO you slipped here ... because the ACLU would argue that teaching a theology class in public school is against the first amendment ... it's all part of the same endgame.

Barry Goldwater was right: "You can't legislate morality".

The whole Old Testament was written to prove that. Man failed The Law every time. Morality comes from the heart and is a product of the New Man's (born again) fruits of the spirit.

The motivation to have His law written on our hearts is loving Him with all our heart. Then comes morality, something that doesn't exist by itself.

Dr. Adams believes in Biblical creation, and doesn't hesitate to say so.

Amazing, isn't it? A man with a PhD, well-regarded in his profession, and also a widely-read conservative columnist ... and he believes God created the heavens and the earth.

I have met a lot of people with PhD's who have some very unusual ideas. Having a PhD in anything that isn't science is generally a sign that a person couldn't figure out what to do with their lives in the mid-20s and had parents with a decent amount of money.

You are right. But too many people here see religion as science and want them taught side by side. Religion belongs in Theology classes, and science belongs in science classes.

My point was that he makes no effort to hide what he believes, and hasn't been "taken in" by anyone. Some people ... some educated, extremely successful people, like Mike Adams and Ann Coulter ... simply don't believe in evolution.

While certain moral imperatives like not committing murder need to be legislated, there is a fine line between legislating morality and using legislation for nanny state social control.
