HARTFORD, Conn. --Republican Rep. Christopher Shays defended the House speaker's handling of a congressional page scandal, saying no one died like at Chappaquiddick in 1969 when Democratic Sen. Edward Kennedy was involved.
"I know the speaker didn't go over a bridge and leave a young person in the water, and then have a press conference the next day," the embattled Connecticut congressman told The Hartford Courant in remarks published Wednesday.
"Dennis Hastert didn't kill anybody," he added.
Shays' comments recalled the Chappaquiddick incident, when Kennedy's car ran off a Massachusetts bridge, killing his passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne. Kennedy did not immediately report the tragedy, and later pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident.
Last week, Kennedy campaigned for Democrat Diane Farrell, who is locked in a bitter fight with Shays that could help determine whether Democrats recapture the House after 12 years of GOP control.
"This is symptomatic of Chris losing his composure in a tight race," Farrell said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press Wednesday. "Chris just seems to be lashing out in anger."
Kennedy's office had a terse response.

TRUTH HURTS HUH?????
Ted Kennedy has a D after his name. That gives him a free pass to do and say anything he wants, especially by the Democrat Networks such as ABC, CBS, and NBC.
Yeah who cares if Byrd burnt crosses, that was like 60 years ago, cut the guy some slack, it isn't as if he has showed any racists tendencies recently.

YEAH, BYRD HAS LOTS OF AFRICAN AMERICANS ON HIS STAFF (NONE)
Mary Jo would still be alive if had been too far. No, it was "A Bridge Too Narrow". For a drunken slimeball.
ROTFLOL! Oh boy, I bet Teddy's going to have a total meltdown when he hears about this. It couldn't happen to a more deserving jackass. :o)
Wow, I'm amazed that the normally mild-mannered RINO Shays would launch a full-frontal attack like that.
I was attending college in Boston at the time of the Chappaquiddick incident.
You could have cut the silence with a knife.
I remember that like it was yesterday. Shameless. They, the MSM, are still at it today. I.e., saving reckless reprobate democrats from themselves. It is truly awful. We need to begin cleaning out the communnists from the Universitys that teach these so called "journalists". They graduate and begin spouting the commie line and protecting their "fellow travelers". Where is the modern day Joe McCarthy when you need him?
Thanks for the ping, I guess this is why they deleated mine.
Anyhow, I'll say what I said before: If there were any people planning on sitting on their hands because Shays wasn't conservative enough, I think they just got planted firmly in his camp.

You'll go from sad to mad...
Actually when Kennedy got back to his "bungalow" his "phone" apparently made around twenty or so calls (I think the number may be higher like in the 30's). In addition Teddy made a point to go to the motel manager and complain about noise from a nearby room and to ask the time (Alibi City) so he was anything but asleep. They had a different plan but eventually decided to not play it out but go with the risky strategy of negligence. With some local officials help he (they) got away with it. Luckily, despite the 1980 Dem Convention, it proved the factor that never allowed him to become President. Thank GOD!
Democrats are the biggest hypocrites. They think that on one hand, not doing enough to find out about trolling for pages disqualifies a Congressman from being Speaker, but they also think that manslaughter doesn't warrant removal from the Senate.
I figured that this was the one you spoke of. I'm amazed that Shays would say this. He really grew a pair of brass ones. I hope the rest of the party follows his example.
