Reports: Plane That Hit Condo Tower Registered to Yankees Pitcher Corey Lidle

small plane crashed into a 50-story luxury high-rise building on Manhattan's Upper East Side Wednesday, igniting a raging fire, killing at least two and initially trapping people on the floors above the point of impact.

New York Police Department officials said two were confirmed dead and there could be more fatalities.

The plane hit the building, located at 524 East 72nd Street, 20 floors above space occupied by the Hospital for Special Surgery.

The New York Fire Department told FOX News that there were people trapped above the point of impact, but the NYPD later said that all occupants located above the fire-ravaged floors had been evacuated.

By 3:30 p.m. ET, the blaze was reported to have been extinguished.

FBI spokeswoman Christine Monaco said there was no indication the crash — which happened five years and one month after Sept. 11, 2001 — was a terrorist attack, but officials "have been sent to the scene as a routine."

"The initial indication is that there is a terrible accident," said Department of Homeland Security spokesman Russ Knocke. Fighter jets, however, were scrambled and were patrolling the skies above major cities as a precaution, according to Defense Department officials.

I call him a selfish arse because he was the pilot and he was not rated to fly in this weather, yet he flew along some of the most populated areas in New York city solely for his own amusement. I don`t even like driving in this weather which is one of the reasons I took off today, the risk factor goes up and I`ve been driving for over 25 years, yet this idiot who has less than 100 hours thinks it`s OK to bring up a little zippy plane in hard rain.

Watch the shysters sue the manufacturer of the airplane. Probably this was pilot error and nothing more.

He'd still be alive if the Yanks had beaten the Tigers. How crazy life is.

Not necessarily. Maybe if he was on the Yanks team plane the whole team might have crashed and lost all. As George Costanza says, it's bound to happen sometime. When your time is up, it's up.

No it doesn't 'remain to be seen' if it's a tragedy.

I was speaking as a pilot. Yes he had children, (two of them, not just a six-year old boy). And with a mere seven months flying experience he chose to fly in weather I would not have even flown in--as did JFK. I just don't it. The guy makes millions. Take a damn commerical plane and wait for a clear day.

His "humor" is not humor, and no it does not make it more bearable. Rather he is a moron and deserves to get a swift punch square in the face.

There were some pictures on the other big thread on this story. It looks like the center of the plane hit between floors, near or right on reinforcing beams. And, it's a composite airframe...the biggest and heaviest thing about it is the engine up front. I wouldn't imagine it weighs much more than 2500 pounds. Imagine a compact car slamming into the front of a building at about 100 mph, especially if it struck a column instead of a glass window. You'd find a lot of parts (of both the occupants and the car) outside.

Just like JFK Jr.

Not really, JFK Jr. was an experienced pilot and was IFR rated (fly by instruments only). Also Cory was not considering running for the same electoral race as Hillary.

$187.000??

Seems awfully cheap for a plane.

Didn't Castro barely get cut from a pro baseball team too?

I was about to say the same thing. They should be taken out to a wall and shot immediately...its quite possible right now as reported on ESPN that his family doesn't even know yet and this filth is already playing a possible suicide angle?

Authorities don't usually release the name until the family has been notified.

And my point is that a plane could crash into any building anywhere, in any type of weather, including a building at an airport killing hundreds of people.

I also realize that plane crashes make the news, but yet 45,000 people died in automobile accidents last year.

Ugly stuff. Assuming it was the single-engine plane we think, when you lose that engine you start looking for a landing place pronto, and altitude is life. You lose it at the wrong time and you end up riding her down looking for a soft spot. It was the one drill I hated the most when going for my general ticket.

Condolences to the family.

I haven't read the entire thread yet, but when they mentioned the deaths in the building, did they give any details? When I tuned into Fox, they were talking about a man, who had to be subdued by NYPD trying to get to the building. His pregnant wife was in their apartment.

...His twin brother, Kevin....

Sad at any time to lose a family member, but to lose a twin like this must be unbearable.

IIRC a twin was lost in the Amish school shooting last week.

Prayers for the families of all concerned and RIP, Corey.
