Reports: Plane That Hit Condo Tower Registered to Yankees Pitcher Corey Lidle

small plane crashed into a 50-story luxury high-rise building on Manhattan's Upper East Side Wednesday, igniting a raging fire, killing at least two and initially trapping people on the floors above the point of impact.

New York Police Department officials said two were confirmed dead and there could be more fatalities.

The plane hit the building, located at 524 East 72nd Street, 20 floors above space occupied by the Hospital for Special Surgery.

The New York Fire Department told FOX News that there were people trapped above the point of impact, but the NYPD later said that all occupants located above the fire-ravaged floors had been evacuated.

By 3:30 p.m. ET, the blaze was reported to have been extinguished.

FBI spokeswoman Christine Monaco said there was no indication the crash — which happened five years and one month after Sept. 11, 2001 — was a terrorist attack, but officials "have been sent to the scene as a routine."

"The initial indication is that there is a terrible accident," said Department of Homeland Security spokesman Russ Knocke. Fighter jets, however, were scrambled and were patrolling the skies above major cities as a precaution, according to Defense Department officials.

“It’s basically to bring things a little closer to reach,” he said. “Now I can go to Pebble Beach if I want, and instead of driving there for five hours, I can fly there in an hour and 45 minutes. I can go to Arizona to golf, or Vegas, wherever.

Like taking the fast route to the Upper East side. Sorry for being crass, but the irony here is remarkable.

No way they were going to start Wang. He's never pitched on three days' rest in his career, and they've been very sensitive to that kind of thing since his injury last year.

"Apparently it did not come into play in this accident, however."

I wonder if the NY fans gave him a lot of grief and he decided to end it.

What in the world would make you think I was suggesting it was Torrie's fault? If you actually read my post, I was talking about fate. I illustrated it with an additional example. We never know where little actions will lead that determine what is going to happen to us. What is wrong with you to suggest that I was even hinting at that? Who knows, if the Yanks had won, perhaps their plane might have crashed going to Oakland. That was the point. Yours was the comment that is unbelievable.

I don't care about Joe Torre.

No it doesn't 'remain to be seen' if it's a tragedy.

A six year old boy now has no father, and his mother is a widow.

Your version of 'humor' is sickening....

Prayers for his family and loved ones!

Can anybody speculate on whether they got into the Mile High Club before they wandered into the building?

Just putting my 2 cents in.......I took it to mean that doug from upland meant..."as fate would have it".....
He certainly wasn't blaming anyone.

Especially now since in the Bloomberg Presser it is now being said instructor and student were killed in the crash...they should apologize to the faces of the Lidle family.

Absolute discrace.

I wonder if the NY fans gave him a lot of grief and he decided to end it.

There was somebody else in the plane and lots of people in the building. I don't think there was any indication that Lidle was depressed or antisocial.

Sounds like a tragic accident.

Lidle was a journeyman starting pitcher -- unspectacular at most times, but could give a team a solid run of 150 or so innnings in a given year. Played for at least a half a dozen teams starting with the A's and moving around from there, mostly in the American League. Seems like he's been around forever.

PS - From memory, I think the Indians boat accident was only Tim Crews and Steve Olin killed, Bob Ojeda surviving.

The excellent Deadball Era website, http://www.thedeadballera.com/ has details on many accidental, intentional and natural passings of major leaguers.

It sounds like he was on a training flight. Mayor Bloomberg said there was also a flight instructor on board.

Interesting note on Lidle . . . He was a "journeyman" pitcher, as you said -- but the Yankees really wanted him as a throw-in player in the Abreu deal this past season because he apparently had a very good record in August and September throughout his career.

Small planes are allowed to fly over the city, once they receive clearance to do it. There are restrictions on altitude.

IF the weather is good. and the farther you fly, the more likely the weather will be an issue.
If you HAVE to be somewhere.... drive.
Being a private pilot does NOT guarantee the ease of travel he was implying. And those comments may be telling of why this accident occured.
