S. Korean Lawmaker, "Russia might have given know-how of miniature nukes to N. Korea"

Kong Sung-jin, a S. Korean opposition lawmaker at Intelligence Committee of National Assembly, told on Oct. 11, "We have intelligence that the reason why Russia is the first nation N. Korea gave advance warning of its nuclear test is because Russia gave N. Korea technology for miniaturizing nukes. They are trying to verify the allegation."

Legislator Kong appeared on 'Open World Today with Chang Sung-min,' a news talk show of Pyong-hwa Radio, and commented, "Russia and China were the first to know N. Korea's nuclear test. Even though it is not verified, we heard that N. Korea notified Russia two hours before the test."

He maintained, "I am sure that N. Korea want to keep equal distance from both countries, but it may also reflect N. Korea's deep dissatisfaction with China, due to its recent pressure on N. Korea."

"China got notified 20 minutes before the test, and notified S. Korea, U.S., and Japan in this order. That is why S. Korea got informed at 10:50 am (Oct. 9.) Since neither of U.S., Japan, and China had not detected underground nuclear test (in advance,) it is not fair that our intelligence gathering ability is at fault."

Russia would be fools if they did. NK would turn right around and use it on them faster than they'd think.

BTW, earlier reports said that the test shot was done in a deep mine.

Russia is helping Iran with their nuclear program, all thw hile they fight Muslims in Chechnya. I am not sure they arent fools. This idea is not so far-fetched as it appears.

I see the diagram that you posted in comment #1. If that diagram is correct, the arched shape of the mountain might have given enough support to prevent a complete cavein (also preventing cratering). ...depends, in part, on the composition of the substrata. A long, horizontal entrance shaft might also have prevented venting of fallout into the sky (spreading what little residue vented that far along the ground, instead). If gamma detection were attempted long after the shot, it might have failed due to fallout decay. If during the shot, the earth above the initial rays might have prevented detection.

And yes, this is only an attempt at guessing.

Maybe they just didn't have the money to make campaign donations to Xlinton's party during the Nineties the way the Chinese did.

Poor Xlinton, victim of those price-cutting Russkies!

Re #24

Thanks for your comments. S. Koreans believe the site was under a hill of 1200 feet in height. However, U.S. locate the position some 20 miles to the north. I am not sure how deep is the tunnel located.

Things get murkier. The last I expected from this test was more confusion. Considering that N. Korea did not make a big celebration extravaganza and had rather subdued coverage, something went wrong with this test.

Clinton gave Russia our nuclear secrets (Design specs, missile specs, ect) as part of treaties he signed with them.

Putin has also threatened Kimmie...
China and Russia knew about the test at the same time. If Russia knew beforehand, they would have told Chinese intel.

See post 18 and get back with me. I offered another possibility. To think Russia would risk helping them obtain a small Nuke would be suicide... and pooty is not a dumb-ass... he is ruthless, but thinks like a fox.

The Chinese and Russians knew exactly what happened. They are only giving out conflicting reports to attempt to throw off our intel people.

I believe the day of the alliance between the reawakened Bear of Russia and Iran will become known one way or another.

If it comes in war, I will not be surpised then, or if sooner.

Putin is a nasty piece of work and so are his henchmen.

Look at the other NK programs like rocketry: while the leader is a deranged baboon, his engineers are perfectly sane and proceed from the simpler to the more complex. Given the fact that their fissionables stockpile is small, they wouldn't be likely to waste the prcious stuff on the advanced experimentation, but stick with what is simpler and easier, but works. Thus as to the nuke design, I'd doubt that their first test would be the one of an advanced model.

Miniature?

Like a "suitcase" nuke?

I keep hearing that these tinpot tyrants don't have the means to deliver their nukes. Don't think ICBMs are really necessary anymore, are they?

"DPRK gave China 20 minutes advance heads up on the test.
DPRK gave RUSSIA a full two hours advance notice."

How do we know either of these statements is true?
