A few weeks ago I wrote a column comparing the 1994 election for the U.S. House of Representatives with this year’s election. I concluded the column by pointing out that history rarely repeats itself exactly. How wrong I was.
The current page scandal is an exact re-run of the scandal House Democrats faced in 1994 over the House Bank and the House postal system, except that the parties are reversed. This year it’s the Republicans who are on the ropes and the outcome should be the same…devastating results for the party in power.
Let’s review the bidding.
In 1994, then Speaker Tom Foley, D-Wash., was slow to react to growing scandals surrounding the operations of the House Bank and the House postal system. There were early warnings that things were amiss but it took Foley and the rest of the Democratic Leadership months to respond and by then the entire matter had spun out of control.
There is a common thread running though the 1994 scandal and today’s scandal: both involved matters that were easily understood by the public and both involved negligent behavior by the people in charge

I believe in 1994 there were over 100 House seats "in play". Toady that number has dropped to maybe just over a dozen due to gerrymandering.
All the discontent is generic with no specifics at all.

But personally I think Americans are smarter than that and see through this double standard and rank hypocrisy you Dems. are flatulating over Foley.
Heck I'll bet on election day 2004 Bush would have lost to a generic Democrat. He just wasn't going to lose to the specific one on the ballot namely Kerry.
They cannot possibly win big by simply trying to score on turnovers.
By their logic the GOP should have cleaned house in 1998.
Again, the Dems don't care about Foley's behavior itself. They celebrate deviancy. Just look at the title and you'll see what they're after -- "Foley SCANDAL."
All they want is the words Republican and Scandal on every news program.

Good point... I've heard this "it's going to be like 1994 was for the Democrats... they had the house banking scandal and that killed them." These commentators conveniently forget the GOP's Contract With America and how that fired up that fall's election. The Mainstream Media ignored the contract back then -- and continues to ignore the lessons learned. I'm sure Nancy Pelosi has a detailed plan that she's going to release anytime soon...

Yup. They couldn't just accept the fact that the voters had voted for something they opposed.
This whole thing will come down to turnout and they know it.
That, and 1994 was more of a "throw the bums in" than "throw the bums out". Newt and the boys had a PLAN. Something the Dems don't and never will have.

in 1994 you had close to a hundred seats in play, and the scandal involved dozens of house members, none of whom recieved any real punishment.
In 2006 you have maybe 10-30 seats in play, and a scandal that involves on pervert who has been unmasked and forced out of office.
Totally different political landscape, totally different scope of scandal, and totally different reaction of house leadership to scandal ---- and no amount of DIMBULB wishful thinking is going to change that.
