I wrote a letter to the author, Mr. Caruba, requesting permission to reprint this on Free Republic for purposes of discussion. He granted permission quickly and generously.
Many will be turned off once they reach the criticisms of the President's education initiative "No Child Left Behind", but many will agree with that program's faults. I've read both sides of the arguments in other threads discussing other articles: this one series seemed well-suited for purposes of discussion and debate on our forum. I hope you all agree.

Thank you for a great post. Let's hope that many read and heed this warning fron Mr. Caruba.
My wife and I recognized this problem early on and enrolled our daughter in a Catholic girls school for her last two years of high school. Her GPA immediately went into free fall. Happily, there was an older lady teacher at that school who voluntarily took charge of her and brought her up to speed.
She went on to complete undergraduate school, law school and now owns her own law practice. (No lawyer jokes, please.) I'm so happy that we had the sense to recognize this problem as early as we did and took corrective action.

It's all true!
Folks can name call you till your blue in the face but the FACT remains, public schools dumb your kids DOWN. Dumbed down parents don't see it because they too have tasted the dumbed down method and think it's fine.

The harsh truth about the subversion of the nations schools has not been a Democratic or Republican program. It has occurred no matter who was in office or who controlled Congress.
That's because we have quite a few authoritarian, pro-statist republicans. More than you'd think.

Administrators and teachers were delighted with this because it eliminated the "meddling" of locally elected and locally responsible school board members.

I won't be turned off, and I'm not afraid of criticizing Bush where he makes mistakes. The Dept of Education should cease to exist. The Founders would be spinning in their graves if they knew....

Worse, todays parents are often required to put their child put on a regimen of Ritalin, a mind-altering drug.
Don't even get me started...just don't.

The Dept of Education should cease to exist... This was a campaign goal of Reagan - one he was unable to deliver, unfortunately. It is illegal...
I had an organization (Families For Freedom) back in the 80's and was umbrellered with like groups around the country.
I worked closely with Charlotte - who then lived only a few miles "down the road". She has dedicated her life to this issue and suffered a lot of slings and arrows...she served in DC during the Reagan years, in the Education Department.
I was a participant in an Eagle Forum Conference - Phylis Schaefly - in the 80's - we had a private tour of the White House and Reagan spoke at our Banquet Dinner.
We worked our butts off, holding the line of these socialists determined to rule this country - and the schools has been their first line of indoctrination...and their plan to infiltrate and take over the democratic party has now reached fruition. We now have two parties: the Republican Party and the Socialist Party. Believe it. If they get back in power - your votes will no longer count. Democracy will be but a memory.

What does it take to start a political think tank anyway? I have so many things that I get on my soap box about that I think are critically important. I was thinking of calling it The Founding Fathers Institute or something along those lines. I'm more convinced than ever before that our only hope as a nation is to return to the principles and faith of our forefathers.

I never realized just what kind of power the national teachers association has until I saw John Stossel's report a few weeks ago, I was horrified. With each article or report that surfaces about what is passing for "education" in the public schools, I feel more and more deeply blessed by the opportunity and privilege to teach my children at home and in their homeschool programs/classes. I just wish more parents would unite to rebel against what the DOE and the teachers association are doing with the majority of this country's future leaders and workers - its frightening.

Great article! That takes me back to my college days. I attended very conservative Hillsdale College. All my college education classes were devoted to this type of discussion and how to combat OBE in our own classrooms.

Maybe freepers should start a "political think tank?"
