Chinese government in firm opposition to DPRK nuclear test
People's Daily Online ^ | 10/9/06

Posted on 10/08/2006 11:43:00 PM PDT by bruinbirdman

The Foreign Ministry of the People's Republic of China issued a statement on a nuclear test conducted by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, with its full text as follows:

The statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China (PRC)

October 9, 2006

The Democratic People¡¯s Republic of Korea (DPRK) outrageously conducted a nuclear test on October 9th in defiance of unanimous opposition from the international community, and the Chinese government voices its firm opposition to the test.

It is the Chinese government's unswerving and consistent position to enable the (Korean) Peninsula to go nuclear-free and oppose nuclear proliferation. The Chinese side strongly demands the DPRK side abide by its commitment to going nuclear free, halt all the activities that will possibly lead to the further deterioration of the situation and once again return to the track of the Six-Party talks.

The maintenance of peace and stability in the Northeast Asia region conforms to the common interests of all the parties concerned. The Chinese government appeal to all the parties concerned to respond calmly and persevere in settling the issue peacefully through consultations and dialogues. And the Chinese side will continue to make its unremitting efforts to this end.

I don't think the Chinese are thrilled about this developement. In spite of claims by some that the Chinese are all knowing and seeing.

Kim recently took a leisurely train ride into China. I doubt they were talking about the weather. They are all in this together.

Well the ChiComs should have thought of that before they bailed out L'il Kim's dad back in 1950.

Yer RIGHT!!!

I'm still pist at the Liberal Rosenburgs for GIVING our atomic secrets to the USSR! Without Liberals such as these there would be no Atomic Commies to this very day!!!

They would rather see the world be worse off than allow Americans to have any secret weapons or other superiority.

The Clintons, Roseburgs and all the other damned leftist Liberals want equal outcomes throughout the entire planet without regard to the obvious exceptionalism of these United States of America!!!

So... You're right! "Never, ever, trust a Commie." Especially an inscruitable CHICOM!!!

The Chinese are not all knowing and all seeing. But it's free Chinese food and fuel that are keeping Kim afloat. As long as China keeps propping Kim up, I have to conclude that its stated objections to a nuclear test are merely crocodile tears.

I've gone over how the potential refugee problem is a non-issue. China can absorb all 20m North Koreans if it has to. China's boomtowns have absorbed over 100m migrants from other parts of China - in many cases, people who neither speak the national language, Mandarin, nor the local languages. China can also deter North Koreans from entering by shooting them at the border, or making an example of the refugees it catches.

China is mounting a massive propaganda effort to portray itself as having lost face, so as to prevent economic sanctions against itself for keeping North Korea's nuclear program going. But the sorry reality is that China is playing good cop to North Korea's bad cop - they're on the same team. Guess who the prisoner is? It's neither China nor North Korea...

Japan won't go nuke. Not if they want to remain under the American conventional and nuclear umbrella*. We have extended our protection to many Asian countries on one condition - that their forces remain conventional. The moment they go nuclear, the offers of protection are off. This is how we prevented South Korea and Taiwan from going nuclear. Why do we do this? Because our word counts for something. If there's going to be a nuclear war involving the US, we want only American fingers on the nuclear button on our side.

* The nuclear umbrella means that an attack on them will provoke an American nuclear response. This is not commonly known, but it is a fact.

"The Clintons, Roseburgs. . ."

Don't forget Clintoon's lady in waiting Energy Secretary Witch Hazel O'Leary who couldn't wait to declassify every nuke, heck everything she could, secrets. Under the guise of letting Americans know what nuke testing did to the environment and people, in that order, she was responsible for all the security lapses at Los Alamos and Livermore.

And you think the DPRK nuclear test isn't straining our agreement with S Korea not to produce it's own nuclear weapons? I would think that now NK has nukes, having to depend on which way the political winds blow in DC may be too much for S Korea.

It shouldn't. South Korea cannot duplicate the US conventional or nuclear armories on its own - it has neither the financial nor the technological werewithal to do so. If the US abrogates the US-Korea mutual defense treaty and withdraws the US Forces-Korea, South Korea will, of course, have no choice. Note that South Korea doesn't merely have to worry about North Korea - even if North Korea were gone, it would have to worry about Japan, China and Russia. That is why South Korea will ultimately choose to cling to Uncle Sam's protection, even if it comes at the cost of an indigenous nuclear force. (Note that any nuclear force is subject to the threat of a command and control first strike. South Korea may not have the money or the technology to create this kind of force. Uncle Sam does).

Yeah, the Chinese are about as 'concerned' about the NPRK conducting nuke tests as the DNC is about national security. They are willing to 'say' they are concerned but are not concerned enough to actually take any action beyond putting on a disappointed look.

Dollar rallies vs. Korean won after North Korean test

By Wanfeng Zhou Last Update: 8:37 AM ET Oct 9, 2006

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- The Korean won tumbled and the yen hit an eight-month low against the dollar Monday, after North Korea declared it had carried out a nuclear test, raising the level of geopolitical risk across the world.

"The fear amongst traders is that unless the North Korean situation is quickly contained, the whole region may decide to militarize with both South Korea and Japan seeking to develop nuclear capability to deter North Koreans," said Boris Schlossberg, senior currency strategist at FXCM.

The dollar rose to as high as 962.35 won. It was last up 1.5% at 951.47 won, compared to 937.54 yen late Friday. The euro was flat at $1.2598. The dollar was up 0.1% at 119.14 yen, after touching 119.29 yen, the highest level since Feb. 3.
