Listening to Art Bell. I don't like all the tin foil and UFO garbage they do, but he has some good military guests and tonight he's got two experts on Korea and the Military situation.

I just saw a report on CNN International that blames President Bush for this. They put a timeline on the screen that says:
JANUARY 2002:
President Bush branded North Korea as part of an "axis of evil"
OCTOBER 2002:
North Korea was discovered to be secretly enriching uranium... a violation of an agreement with the US
In other words, that cowboy Bush scared Kim into developing nukes because he thought President Bush would invade North Korea just like Afghanistan and Iraq. I know, it completely ignores all sortsa stuff but what do you expect?

"My kids want to know how many M-80's it would take to match this type of explosion"
4 /m-80 will equal a stick of dynamite. look up the conversion to tnt and it should be easy to figure it out.

Sounds like a fizzle to me.............. Or a very bad atomic (not nuclear) device. Or a typo.

I think it's just bad information. I'll be very surprised if it turns out to be that low.

A fizzle isn't a failure. It is simply a device that did not go off at full yield.
Based on my knowledge of nuclear weapons, I suspect they were going for something in the 20-50 kiloton range but the bomb only went off at a fraction of that.

Well, the Trinity device was 20-21 Kt. 550 T is small by any measure, although if it were a nuclear test still notable.

Where is my logic flawed? Because they could easily fired off a "gun" type U235 device to show they were a "nuklar" power. There is no useful demonstration of a "triggering device" that anyone other than the monitoring engineers would be aware of.

Hey Little Kim you call this little test?
OH HELL NO

Any idea why the first reports were 400 Kt?

To: zarf
A real M-80, not the Class C toys sold now, contains about 3 grams of explosive filler. 550 metric tons is 550 million grams.
So if M-80 filler is as energetic as TNT, which it probably isn't, that would be about 180 million M-80s.

Because the media doesn't have a clue.
400kt would either be a very large pure fission bomb similar to the U.S. Mark-18 design, or a thermonuclear bomb whose secondary didn't work.

Or a very bad atomic (not nuclear) device, Same-same, n'est ce pas?
To: zencat
Actually, the only report I heard about 400 Kt was one about them hoping that it would be 400 Kt (this was on FOX). However, that sounds absolutely silly to me, and I don't think even such egomaniacs as Kim and his buddies in NK would have expected anything more than 20-4t Kt out of their first bomb.
