Foley: The Final Straw
Time ^ | October 7, 2006 | Frank Luntz

Had enough?

America has. Anyone who reads the polls accurately and honestly will acknowledge that the Republican Party is likely to lose control of the House of Representatives, the so-called "People's House." The Democrats maintained control for 40 years. The Republicans, just 12.

What went wrong? Why do Democrats finally appear to be heading toward electoral success and Republicans back into the political wilderness? In a word, fatigue. Americans are tired of the war, tired of watching illegal aliens race across our unguarded borders, tired of high energy costs, tired of wasteful Washington spending, and tired of story after story of political corruption and misbehavior.

As a pollster, my job is to tap the public mood. As a linguist, my efforts are focused on the words of the electorate and how best to communicate a set of priorities and principles. For the past three months, in focus groups literally from coast to coast — and a dozen states in between — I have heard the constant grumblings of Republicans that their party didn't do enough to follow through on their promises and the anger of Democrats who felt the G.O.P. went too far. Damned if you do. Damned if you don't.

And the language voters now use to describe Congress can only be heard after nasty divorce settlements and in the subways of New York. I've had voters spit on me as they emphasize the "d" in "do nothing" and the "c" in "corrupt."

Who can blame them? The Republican Party of 2006 is a tired, cranky shell of the aggressive, reformist movement that was swept into office in 1994 on a wave of positive change. I knew those Republicans. I worked for them. They were friends of mine. These Republicans are not those Republicans.

"An actual conservative can be nothing but thoroughly disgusted with both parties, and my (blank) ballot will reflect that."

With what is at stake, you blank ballot reflects a blank mind.

An actual conservative can be nothing but thoroughly disgusted with both parties, and my (blank) ballot will reflect that.

You are not one bit more conservative than I am, thoughtomator. But if you cast a blank ballot, you are simply a fool.

I suppose us RHINO'S are better at keeping up with current events.

If you saw a post somewhere on FR that defended Foley please point it out.

OTOH, if you saw the posted article about Foley having an affair with a 21 year old ex-page don't bother, because I'm not interested in what a ex-congressman did in his bedroom.

"Frank Luntz is a discredited pollster who declared on election night that Kerry won."

It amazes me that whenever PMSNBC or NBC has him on, he's referred to as a "Republican pollster".

You have misinterpreted my post. The Democrats deserve nothing. And the GOP too, deserves nothing - and it has worked very hard over the past 6 years to be deserving of nothing.

"That the governing party of the world's only superpower could be felled by one creepy pervert's masturbatory e-mails and IMs is an event historians will marvel at." V. FR Post, Page scandal makes America look crazy.

The whole thing appears to be nothing more than typical homosexual activity. The "victim" appears to be of age and the instant messaging does not appear to be one sided. The problem is the MSM cried "huge scandal" and the Republican leadership agreed. Hastert should have said " the Democrat Party has worked hard through laws and through the courts to insure homosexual rights. These include the rights of homosexuals to have contact, even sexual contact, with young adult males. In fact the Democrats would have it be acceptable for Congressman Foley to marry the young man in question. If this does not reflect your values than blame the Democrats who embrace such lifestyle choices". The story, and the position of Republican candidates, would be quite different if he had.

Why they expect loyalty from a party to whom they have never shown loyalty is, frankly, beyond me.

Until proved differently, I will work for and talk about our win this fall. Period. If things do not go our way, we will regroup and start again.

In fact, we should do that even when we DO win this fall!

Luntz is the "Republican Pollster" who sent out a "Kerry wins" email to all of his liberal friends in the media at 4pm on election day.

Not a very conservative position. I suppose us RHINO's will do all the work.

You must have a VERY short memory. It is your very own post from less than 7 hours ago that I quoted verbatim.

I will vote for every conservative that appears on my ballot. And thus, it will be blank.

I'm not interested in punishing republicans.
I DO CARE about preserving American interests and values.

Punishing republicans does nothing to advance the war on terrorism. Punishing republicans does nothing to get the extra seat we need on the Supreme Court.

I want to defeat the media and the democrats for the sake of our country. Defeating the democrats means defeating their vile filthy tactics. Amazingly, the democrats realize they can't win with the anti-war message so they have to resort to smears, lies, and treachery.
Think about it if the dems lose this one what are they going to do? Is there any card left they haven't played?

Vote for our troops. Vote for a conservative Supreme Court. Vote for America. Vote to teach the dirty dems a lesson, if nothing else.

Bud, when they're bending you over and burning your church, you'll think differently about all this.

I could not agree with you more. The media is doing this story 24/7 and it is disgustingly blatant bias aimed to destroy our party. They are absolutely traitors to this country as well. I am fed up with it, and this is indeed the final straw, but not like they mean it!

Try reading for comprehension, and quit cherry picking my post

The unidentified former page told the Los Angeles Times Sunday that he was 21 when he and the Florida Republican congressman had sex..

Like I said I'm not interested with what he did in his bedroom with an ADULT

Wow. Maybe he should be renamed "Frank Putz."

I knew he was a weasel, but that's a mega-weasel.

Also, it doesn't inspire confidence when a pollster, strategist, etc., looks like he's about 22 years old.

Two years of Charlie Rangel refusing to fund the military can do a lot of harm. I refuse to think this is a good idea..."winning by losing." Hogwash.

Few people are going to change their votes over this issue, and I am sick of people acting like Time Magazine is even going to come close to telling the truth!

Their cover is an elephant rear end! What does THAT tell you?

Common tater, I just wanted to say that I completely agree with you. I know my previous reply to you sounded like I was responding in opposition to your views.

I meant to wholeheartedly endorse your excellent words and extreme rationality.
I don't understand some people. This is no time to walk away or punish the republicans. We had that chance in the primaries. Now is the time to support our troops and our president in this time of war.
