Tobacco prohibited in the public places at February 1, 2007 in France

PARIS - the tobacco will be interdict in France in all the public places as from February 1, 2007, except in the coffees, tobaccos, restaurants and discotheques which will have until January 1, 2008 to adapt, announced to Sunday the Dominique de Villepin Prime Minister.

The tobacco "will be interdict in all the public places, schools, colleges, stores" as from February 1 2007", declared the Prime Minister. The decree of prohibition would be taken "in the next days, in November", it ensured.

However, "the establishments which traditionally accomodate the smokers, like the bar, restaurants, discotheques will have an additional time until January 1, 2008", it specified.

The contraveners will be struck of a "contractual fine" of 75 euros for the individuals and of 150 euros for the responsible establishments, the Prime Minister specified.

On the other hand, "there will remain possible to smoke in the street and the deprived places", he added.

The cigarette causes "more than thirteen dead per day. It is an unbearable reality in our country ", it affirmed.

I just got back from Paris and was amazed how many people smoked. Not only that, they don't even try to find a place to put the butts, they just throw them on the ground, on the sidewalk, even on the grounds of Notre Dame.

Of course there is a good side to this. The proliferation of "trash" means that many people are employed to clean up the mess each night.

The abortion also causes more than 13 dead per day, but is not so much an unbearable reality in France as the cigarette, oui?
