California Candidates Angelides and Schwarzenegger Spar Over Economy
Forbes ^ | Oct. 7, 2006 | JULIET WILLIAMS

"I can tell by the joy I see in your eyes that you love to raise taxes," the governor said to Angelides. "Why don't you just say right now, 'I love increasing your taxes.'"

Angelides said his plan was to raise taxes on the wealthy and close corporate tax loopholes, in part to help California balance its budget and fully fund education.

"Who can you trust to do the right thing by middle class families in this state?" Angelides said.

The governor noted the difference between California's economic situation today and three years ago, when Davis was ousted amid a record budget deficit.

Schwarzenegger said he has worked to reduce the deficit, strengthen the state's credit rating, improve the business climate and "make us shine again."

"I feel a little bit like I'm having dinner with Uncle Teddy at Thanksgiving," the governor quipped, referring to Sen. Ted Kennedy, the uncle of his wife, Maria Shriver.

My take on the debate was that it was not every exciting, Arnold came out well, didn't make any mistakes, and Angelides didn't score any points, if anything, negative points, because he appeared whiny and mean spirited, while Arnold acted like a statesman.

This isn't going to help Angelides in the polls.

But remember, the only poll that counts is the actual ballot, so everyone get out and vote for Arnold and straight Republican ticket.

I see this is the new liberal mantra.

The gazillions to schools - through raised taxes, bonds, etc. - is apparently only partial funding. I shudder to think what "fully funding" education looks like. And I know that no matter what the funding is, the output will still be an embarrassment. And they will come back the following year begging for more.

"Fully funded" is when every illegal alien is provided free education through the post graduate level.

"fully fund education" is not just the liberal mantra. The Arnold ads also talk about how much California has "funded" or "invested" in education since he took office.
Whether it is a Democrat or a Republican it is all just money down the drain in California.

SAdly, you're right. If today's politicians aren't the most ball-free men on the planet I'll eat my hat.

1. Arnold has to defend himself.

2. In CA the voters passed Prop. 98 some years ago, which mandates that some huge fraction of the budget be spent on education. Arnold put Prop. 76 in 2005 special election, the "spend within your means" proposition on the ballot, which would have gotten rid of the worst provisions of Prop. 98, to help ballance the budget and CA voters defeated it.

Perfect. I'm sure the video on that will be excellent. I can't believe that we don't say this every day of hte year about Pelosi and Co. as the first words out of our mouths.

Yep. 18 years ago. And somehow all those Governor's (except Schwarzenegger and Davis in his 5th year) were able to balance the budget without deficit spending and unconstitutional borrowing.

And for Arnold put Prop. 76 in 2005 special election... which would have gotten rid of the worst provisions of Prop. 98, to help ballance the budget and CA voters defeated it.

WRONG! The change in Prop 98 would have made sure that education spending would NEVER go down. It also authorized $10 billion in new bonds and borrowing--thank goodness the voters rejected it it.

Sure, that's why all the Democrats, unions, and YOU, voted against it, and Republicans and conservatives were FOR Prop. 76, which would have limited the ability of the Legislature to continue their drunken sailor spending.

You can tell a bird from their feather and a man from the company he keeps.

You are always on the side of the Democrats, while louldy proclaming how conservative you are.

How many times do we have to go through this, FO. More than half of republicans opposed Prop 76. It was a masked borrowing scheme--nothing more. His own campaign manager said it would do nothing to reduce spending for the next decade, at least. The Prop 98 change deleting "Test 3", as I said, guaranteed that education spending would NEVER go down.

Yeah... right. You're the one poo-pooing Mountjoy and saying Arnold can't be seen with McClintock. You're the one that tried to push Prop 58, socialized medicine on the voters through your posts at FR. You're the one pushing for huge borrowing schemes even though it has been demonstrated that only miniscule amounts will go to roads, the rest funding pork and advancing the Soviet plan through inner-city rail and other 'smart growth' programs.

Angelides is counting on the ignorance of California voters who do not know half the state budget goes to fund education. Its the single largest expense in the state budget every year. How much more money does Angelides think the schools need? He talks about throwing more money at it but makes no demands for greater accountability, learning improvements and school choice.

I have yet to see the Arnold cheerleaders say something about helping the downticket candidates. Arnold is going to get re-elected. Where's the push for the rest of the team? The CAGOP deserves better than not making an all-out push for victory for ALL the Republican candidates in California, not just Arnold!

I suspect they're still smitten with Arnold the Terminator and the Action Hero.

I suspect some of them are smitten with his left wing political views. Sadly enough.
