Foley, Gay Republicans, And "The List"
CBS News - Public EYE ^ | 10.05.06 | Brian Montopoli

Posted on 10/07/2006 1:35:46 PM PDT by rface

On Tuesday night's "Evening News," Gloria Borger said this:

"One senior House Republican tells CBS that there's a lot of anger at what he describes as 'a network of gay staffers and gay members who protect each other and did the speaker a disservice.'"

The New Republic's Michael Crowley picks up on Borger's comment. He argues that "it's becoming clear that some people on Capitol Hill are promoting a storyline that involves gay Republican staffers--apparently led by [Tom Reynolds's chief of staff Kirk] Fordham--covering up for Mark Foley." Crowley suggests "maybe this is how Dennis Hastert and his compatriots are explaining themselves to the base."

He also notes David Corn's report on "The List" – a document being passed around political circles of high-level Republican congressional aides who are gay.

Corn, a liberal, says he will not publish The List, even though he has a copy. Here's his conclusion:

Let's be clear about one thing: the Mark Foley scandal is not about homosexuality. Some family value conservatives are suggesting it is. But anytime a gay Republican is outed by events, a dicey issue is raised: what about those GOPers who are gay and who serve a party that is anti-gay? Are they hypocrites, opportunists, or just confused individuals? Is it possible to support a party because you adhere to most of its tenets--even if that party refuses to recognize you as a full citizen? The men on The List might want to think hard about these questions--as they probably already have--for if I have a copy of The List, there's a good chance it will be appearing soon on a website near everyone......

Disgusting comment that basically goes unchallenged.

The list is about outting gays who don't support the "gay agenda".

"The public will see this as a dirty trick"

I have lost faith in the public. I live in New Jersey, home of the stupidest voter on the planet. :)

..What we have here is a very audacious attempt at driving a wedge between key camps or voting blocs who support Republicans. Evangelicals and other staunch values ..

And for that reason I give them credit!... in fact, i have given them credit for a long long time... ever since the days - I remember clearly - they came out saying "we are queers, we are here.. etc" because they have fought and worked vey activaly for the past 30 years and look at the result: The Media, schools, universities, hollywood are pro-queer.... and that is a VICTORY as far as I am concerned, etc etc etc.

We, Republicans on the other hand are very vocal about "values," so I find it HYPOCRITICAL from our legislators when they don't uphold the values of the people who elect them. I know, that we in red states suppose to be stupid and un-sophisticated :)... and maybe we have been!

In any case it's good to have it out in the open... the best policy as far as I am concerned.

WTH! I thought gay liberal activist Mark Rogers was the one with the list of gay Republicans he was threatening to uncloset. So the media writes some sleazy story making it look like the Republicans made this list?

In what way is anyone with same sex attraction not a full citizen? They have the same civil rights that anyone else has.

Be gay in the open or be gay in the closet, but you better not support things like gay adoption or gay marriage.

There are many homosexuals who oppose these things, but apparently the Democrats and the gay activists don't believe in freedom of thought for homosexuals -- kind of like the Dem. treatment of conservative African Americans.

Why isn't Hilary on this list?

Because she's not a Republican.

For me, it's a matter of hating the sin, but being capable of loving the sinner. Most of the time, it leads to destructive thinking & lifestyle. Like all other things that lead to destructive thinking & lifestyles, the "agenda" needs to be stopped.

I don't hate drunks, but I don't approve...

Well ok, HATE is a very strong word. If I HATE someone I would want to kill them, as I know I would want to KILL someone who abused people dear to me.

I like your example though. I also don't like prostitutes, thieves, killers, drunks, drug attics... and so on. The difference is I don't see the drunks or prostitutes attacking every institution and trying to force their lifestyle on my family or my country. And therefore, I don't have an issue with them. Live and let live.

...- but he certainly supports Gay Marriage.

Gays can get married, and often do. What's illegal (because it contradicts the very definition of "marriage") is men marrying men, and women marrying women. It's also illegal (in our culture) for "marriages" to include young children, close relatives, non-humans, multiple persons, etc.

What your cousin should want is a civil contract that is mutually binding in the same manner as "marriage".

Sounds like you are painting with a broad brush. Not all homosexuals support the gay activist agenda, and some even believe that homosexual activity is sinful and endeavor to remain chaste or seek therapy to try to change. Love the sinner and hate the sin is the Christian way.

"We, Republicans on the other hand are very vocal about "values," so I find it HYPOCRITICAL from our legislators when they don't uphold the values of the people who elect them."

They're human and fallible, just as you are, ElPatriota. Just as I am, and everyone else is. We'll see what the end result of all this is, in due time. It could well mean that Republicans will think twice about running a candidate, or hiring a staffer, who is homosexual, or who could even be perceived as such. The ones who just cannot control themselves, such as Mark Foley, and the ones who are pushing the so-called "gay agenda" just as surely as any Democrat, to them I say "good riddance." There are, however, some who have contributed to the success of the party, quietly and behind the scenes, and have lived out their lives quietly and behind the scenes as well. I'm not so sure what the benefit of a blanket purge would be, if this sort of person is rooted out and shunned. I just don't know.

The reason the people are on that list is because they are the ones who are against forcing the gay lifestyle on society. IOW, the gay people who agree with your political position about "gay rights" are the ones that this gay activist is going after.

..For me, it's a matter of hating the sin, but being capable of loving the sinner..

And you know what? that is EXACTLY why I am not a "religious" person. I am not gifted enough to be that kind of a person. I was raised Catholic and guilt was severe if one got our of line. You did the deedd, you paid for it (accept the consequences for your actions - And I agree with that principle. Ever since I was a kid I would hear the "turn the other cheek..." something inside me.. would not agree with me. So after a lot of fighting with the church I left for good. I will tell you one thing, truly, I am NOT a hypocrite (or try very hard not be)... and I have paid dearly because of it. Whereas I have seem many so called pious, religious people, doing, saying reprehensible things (not everyone! but enough)
