It's hard to believe this petite, well-mannered Texan - sitting opposite in a Sydney harbourside hotel - caused the kind of stir the music industry has not seen since John Lennon sang about being crucified in 1969.
It's the day before the band's first Australian concert on their Accidents and Accusations world tour.
Maines looks younger than her 31 years.

Aware she may sound "bizarre", the 31-year-old believes the vitriol directed at The Dixie Chicks was part of a right-wing conspiracy.
An organised group known as the Free Republic set out to bring the band down.
The organisation's power, she says, comes through the internet. The site has thousands of subscribers, all of whom were encouraged to destroy the band's music and boycott the radio stations that played it.
"It's scary how much power they do have," she says. "They can take down someone singlehandedly and I don't think Americans are aware of that.
"It's the same group that went after (former US president) Bill Clinton and (gay actress) Ellen DeGeneres."
In the beginning, Maines says, they tried to fight their detractors. Their management tried to alert radio station programmers to what was happening.
"But they weren't open to it and just thought we were grasping at straws to try and salvage something," she says.
"It was just bigger than we could fight and we weren't willing to put ourselves out there to be made to look stupid if people weren't willing to investigate this thing and be open to it."

"For the Free Republic we were a dream come true; they made it their mission to take us down. Apparently we were not supposed to think like this because we play country music."

When I first scanned the article, I read 'petite' as 'puerile.' hahahah. I did a double-take, but it was only 'petite.' 'Puerile' would fit much better.
"I've gotten past it as far as it doesn't consume me, and I can talk about it without crying, but I have still not forgiven the ignorance of people and the hatred of people."
How cute. She's the one who needs to forgive the little people! She's amazingly obnoxious. For such a long article, it's impressive that they didn't see it fit to remind people of how she insulted her fans (actually, her ex-fans) by the way she keeps describing them.
Hey did you know there was a neurotic meerkat named after you?
I am gonna quote a music critic review from "Spinal Tap" and apply it to the Dixie Chicks:
Their tasteless behavior is indication of the lack of musical invention within. The musical growth rate of this band cannot even be charted. They are treading water in a sea of retarded sexuality and bad poetry.
"petite" and "well-mannered" are not the ways I would describe that short, fat blowhard who shot off her mouth, insulted her fans (and the President) and who is now suffering the effects of her actions. I have negative sympathy for those three dumb*sses.
Hey FAT NAT: don't go away mad... just go away, please.
No Natalie, you are doing that yourself.
You need to understand that you have every right to say stupid crap, and no one thinks you cant. But also, you need to figure out that there can be consequences for the things you say and we have the right to show your our disgust with people like you and your ilk.
You reap what you sow chick.
GottauvAkitas1 started that train rolling right after chavez finished his speech.
My wife mentioned she heard that most of the 7-11's around here were going to change their signs.
Petite implies ...short.....it can also be slim, but petite sizes go up to 16!
Excellent!
Woo Hoo!
The day all this crap started with those skanks I broke my CDs in half and pitched them in the trash....the only station I know that plays them that I listen to is WSM in DC - and when I'm up there, if one of their songs comes on the radio, I change stations for the remainder of the day! The absolutely don't play any on KSJ here in Mobile! Nor of KILT in Houston! (And I'm sure you know by now that Arkansas beat Awburn!)
And don't forget the evil giggle
All you fan base are belong to us!
We are your overlords!
