There are, as I've tried to point out, elements in Islamic society which could well be conducive to democracy. And there are encouraging signs at the present moment--what happened in Iraq, for example, with millions of Iraqis willing to stand in line to vote, knowing that they were risking their lives, is a quite extraordinary achievement. It shows great courage, great resolution.
Bingo! Dr Lewis nails it...again.

After 9-11 OBL expected two things to happen
1 America would start bombing the Arab world
Causing
2 The Muslims world wide to flock to his banner.
When neither of these things happened he lost. Now it's just a matter of time and resolve to stay the course the President has set.

A strange analysis in that it starts with Egypt under Napoleon and neglects Egypt shortly thereafter under Muhammad Ali. While not an Egyptian, Ali was certainly a moderniser who introduced European fighting methods and industrial economic/innovations successfully to Egypt. The threat he wound up posing to the Ottoman empire (pleasantly regarded already as the sick man of Europe by her European rivals) was such that the Europeans combined to shut him down rather than risk the Ottoman empire being taken over by a more vigorous, innovative creation.

Sometimes the lightbulb goes on and I have an actual thought, granted it doesn't happen to often.
It's difficult for anyone to step back and see the "big picture," and I think you succeeded very nicely. You've certainly given me a new way of looking at things.
The folks who are most negative about our fight are the ones who are taking too many snapshots. They are throwing away the images showing success, saying those are aberrations. They are duplicating and distributing the images showing failure. They are even manufacturing fake images of failure.
