Two former executives at a government-funded youth organization whose finances were scrutinized after it diverted money to the liberal radio network Air America were charged Thursday with misappropriating $1.2 million of the non-profit's funds.
Charles Rosen, a former executive director at the Gloria Wise Community Center, and his former assistant director, Jeffrey Aulenbach, face charges of grand larceny and obstructing governmental administration. Rosen was also charged with forgery.
New York City's Department of Investigation, which investigated the nonprofit for two years, said the men improperly took more than $290,000 from the organization for their personal use, on top of their already unusually large salaries.
The money -- described in the non-profit's books as business expenses -- went to pay for home renovations and furnishings and new cars, among other things, according to a Department of Investigation report released Thursday.
City investigators said the pair also improperly transferred $875,000 to Air America, which was co-founded by one of Gloria Wise's executives.
At the time, the Gloria Wise center ran a school and youth programs in the Bronx, and was affiliated with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, but most of its money came from government grants and contracts.
The public disclosure of the club's "loan" to Air America prompted heavy criticism and charges of hypocrisy from conservative commentators in 2005.
Air America blamed the transaction on its former chairman, Evan Montvel-Cohen, who was ousted in 2004 amid questions over the validity of his investments in the network.
The radio network has since repaid the money. Under a recent agreement, the bulk of it was returned to New York City agencies. Some was returned to the Gloria Wise organization, which reorganized, took on new management and continues to operate a nursery school program.
So Rush uses Viagra and Air Amerika steals from children!!
What do you wanna bet that Airhead Amerika is going to blame all this on the "FReepers"?
Five, four, three, two, one...
Nothing to see here, folks, let's move on.
When can we expect to see Al Franken "frog-marched" out of the AAR studios?
Can you say "delusional?"
Good. Rosen is a particularly vile and thuggish individual.
Nah. They've already done the "mistakes were made" thing. I always like that argument, since it makes it sound like mistakes (aka in non-PC speak, 'crimes') make themselves.
To misappropriate charity money is inconscionable. Only the Mafia has the cojones to make such a grab of taxpayer money, though. Air America found suitable stable mates. Jail time all around, and pass me the consiguleri.
"It's the FREEPERS fault, it's the FREEPERS fault! Where's my gumbo?"
Wow! I never knew that Carville and Gollum were siblings!
I remember the days when a story like this would be front page news, but, the MSM (including FOX) has sexual fantasies of perverted gay love and it is a non-news item.
Actually, Gollum is merely Carville without the makeup.

The WCBSTV article says Rosen and Auelenbach were "charged" with various felonies yesterday. According to the NYT, however,
Yesterday, Charles Rosen, 63, the executive director of Gloria Wise from 1993 to 2005, and Jeffrey Aulenbach, 46, the former deputy director for operations at the charity, pleaded guilty in State Supreme Court in the Bronx to grand larceny and obstruction of government administration.
and
Mr. Rosen and Mr. Aulenbach agreed to make restitution of $38,575 and $32,363, respectively, and to pay a $5,000 fine each, according to the state attorney generals office, which prosecuted the case. The plea agreement, entered before Justice John N. Byrne, bars them from working at a nonprofit group for three years.
If the NYT account is right, they aren't doing any jail time at all for this massive fraud and each is paying fines and restitution of less than half the amount he stole. The DemonRats really do a great job of taking care of their own. This same kind of thing, on a massive scale, is what we'll get if the DemonRats win the '06 election.
It looks like they aren't going to get any jail time at all and will only receive modest fines and restitution that add up to well under half of what they stole. Please see my post at No. 18. It's disgusting.
