Inmate Study: Women More Abused Than Men

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- Women inmates in New Jersey's prisons are twice as likely to be raped and nearly six times more likely to be otherwise sexually abused by other inmates than their male counterparts, according to a new federal study.

The study, published in the most recent edition of the Journal of Urban Health: Bulletin of The New York Academy of Medicine, reports that about one in five female inmates said they've been either raped or abused while in prison. It also found that New Jersey's male inmates were more likely to be sexually abused by prison staff than by other inmates.

"Women inmates in New Jersey's prisons are twice as likely to be raped and nearly six times more likely to be otherwise sexually abused by other inmates than their male counterparts, according to a new federal study."

Some of the men may be ashamed and embarassed to tell authorities they were raped by a man.

Guards are supposed to guard. That means peacekeepers.

Prison rape is used as a punishment/reward.

"It also found that New Jersey's male inmates were more likely to be sexually abused by prison staff than by other inmates"

The only difference between some of the guards and the inmates are a badge and being on the other side of the bars.

i SAY WRONG.

Think about this....most women are preached to from fem society (NOW groups) that they are victims. Most women wear this as a badge. So, when doing this study, what do you think their responses would be.

For men...

Men are told to suck it up, suffer and shut up about it. Do you actually think most would admit it if it did happen to them?

Female inmates with male guards are likely to be raped by force or with the promise of protection/favors in exchange for sex. Some might not agree with that situation but if someone is using their position of authority to coerce sex from someone in a weaker position who wouldn't be giving it up otherwise then that is a form of rape.

However, if you read the stats it is obvious a bogus sample.

Reward for the giver, who is also used as an enforcer.

That is disgusting. That should never happen. I know prison isn't supposed to be fun & games, but it still shouldn't happen.

Think about it, how close to jail any of us are to potentially going to jail. 2 drinks at the company christmas party, and a road block on the way home. If there is some MADD broad sitting in the courtroom staring down the judge, you could do a year in the joint, get raped by bubba and end up with aids.

It's supposed to suck.

True, but it's not supposed to suck like that. Allowing crimes to take place (even when the victim is incarcerated) is wrong and should be prosecuted as such.

The law needs to cover behavior everywhere for it to be respected and effective.

But, what if the giver wants to enforce more than the guards want him to?

I figured that out from those cheesy movies about 'women behind bars'.

Thank you Linda Blair and "Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS".

But, but, you shouldn't have been drinking!
/moronic FR authoritarian

Seriously, there are a lot of people on FR that'd be in favor of execution for speeding. I think there truly are FReepers that if you died 30 years before you should've from AIDS contracted from Bubba because you got sent to jail for having those two proverbial drinks, they wouldn't care. There are more than a few on this forum that like to see blood spilled.

If the hadn't committed felonies, they would have had the right to keep and bear arms. Fewer rapes and abuses are visited on your person when you're packin' heat.

I'm sorry, but rape in prison is not a prescribed punishment in this nation. I can't believe that there are conservatives that view a blatant violation of the protection against cruel and unusual punishment as acceptable and, in some cases, somewhat entertaining.

My attitude being that how you treat the imprisoned reflects back on who you are more than on what they've done.
