What I dismissed, and what you should dismiss, is any crackpot claim that the GOP planned this whole scandal to bring Hastert down.

I agree. The Speaker is using all his skill to try to dodge the bullet. He knows what happened to Newt and Tom when the media and others wanted a high-tech lynching against the GOP House stars.
