Scranton -- Rep. Don Sherwood, a Republican fighting for re-election in northeastern Pennsylvania, says in a TV ad that he is "truly sorry" for cheating on his wife but denies ever abusing the woman he had the affair with.

In the ad, he acknowledges that the affair nearly cost him the love of his wife and his daughters. He said his family has worked through it "because of my deep regret, our love and the fact that the allegation of abuse was never true."

"While I'm truly sorry for disappointing you, I never wavered from my commitment to reduce taxes, create jobs and bring home our fair share," Sherwood said, addressing viewers. "Should you forgive me, you can count on me to keep on fighting hard for you and your family."

Sherwood, a four-term congressman, has a seat that had been considered safe until it was revealed last year that police in 2004 investigated an incident between Sherwood and Cynthia Ore at his Washington apartment.

Charges were never filed,

Agree 100%. I think while he has been moderately effective behind the scenes, unfortunately the job of speaker is to be up front, to take on the creeps on TV. Hastert has been worse than MIA on that. Newt put his foot in his mouth from time to time, but at least he was on TV when he did so.

Was Monica really 19 when she serviced Bill Clinton?

No; she was 20-something.

The GOP is eating their young right now> If John McCain wants to make it thru the 08 GOP primaries, he could start by supporting Haesert publicly

I agree with you that Sherwood should have been talked into retirement but DC pols of either party just don't work that way.

Why do guys well into their 70's or beyond want so separately to hold onto their seats?

The Sherwood situation bugs me because this should still be a safe R seat. If not for the affair there's a good possibility Sherwood would have been unopposed again.

That said the 10th CD is getting less R because of people moving in from NJ and NY but no where near actually turning D in normal times.

Between this, Foley and now that other Democrat who is charging phone sex calls to the taxpayers, it's like a scumbag roundup this month.

" Peter Fiztgerald's relationship with the IL GOP soured."

Interesting. It got sour with the Gov guy who got convicted of corruption? fancy that... so those corrupt 'get along go along' GOP leader didnt like a smart effective senator and his DA.

It's tragic we threw away the Fitzgerald seat for obamarama.
