Prime Minister John Howard has compared Islamist terrorism to Cold War communism as a threat to the values of free societies.
Mr Howard has told an anniversary dinner for the magazine Quadrant that the ideological contest with communism was the defining global struggle of the second half of the 20th Century.
Mr Howard says the battle against Islamist tyranny is the global struggle of the new century.
"The fact is we are part of a global campaign for the very ideals that some people wistfully dreamed were unchallengeable after the Cold War," he said.
"No less than in that long twilight struggle, this too will be a generational struggle for the ideals of democratic freedom and liberty under law."
However, Mr Howard stresses that Western action against terrorism should not be seen as action against Islam.
"To those who want to portray the West as anti-Muslim I would say that it was not the Arab League who went to war in the 1990s on behalf of Muslim minorities in the Balkans," he said.
"It was the governments of the United States, the United Kingdom and their NATO allies."
He says terrorists and suicide bombers are killing innocent Muslim civilians every day and western action in Iraq is part of a confrontation with Islamist tyranny.
"It remains, to borrow a phrase, an inconvenient truth that if countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia simply abandon the people of Iraq this would be an enormous victory for the forces of terror and extremism around the world," he said.

I'm sure Mr. Howard won't mind if the GOP borrows that line about "an inconvenient truth"...

Well in my opinion Mr. Howard is dead on in his description.
Our liberals are part of the same mindset, I would say that our Speaker Hastert has been plenty terrorized by them this week.
Further look as the continuing communistic/socialistic and capitalcommies nations of this world, they are not just onlookers in this war.

Ausie Dasher - you post a lot of Howard's tremendous comments on FR. I'm wondering - does most of Australia share his opinions or do you have a lot of sniveling, cowardly libs over there as well?

Interesting thing, too, about our own liberals....from their continuing bad behavior it seems apparent to me that if they had the kind of control they seem to want we would have massacres here rivaling those of Stalin. Certainly, the gulags would reappear. Just about any poster on the Daily Kos or Democratic Underground pretty much confirm this impression.

Mr. Howard seems to be a very smart man. Communism and radical Islam are both extremely dangerous mindsets which seek the complete assimilation of all the world to their ideals, and death or imprisonment to those who don't share those ideals.

Put it this way, he's been PM for ten years and last election increased his majority.
We have the loopy left too, but seem to have them a little more under control than some parts of the US.

Personally I believe that these massive illegal marches were to serve as much as anything a warning 'if' things did not go the liberal way.
Their A.N.S.W.E.R. crowd did try to create that climate of violence, as well as that union walk out on the docks in California a few years back. So the liberals do have in a manner of speaking their own fedayheen.

Finally someone sees the connection between the left and jihadism!

Prime Minister Howard shows that he does not have the slightest clue about geopolitics.
Communism is a tightly controlled political secular ideology based on elite control of a country and everything and everyone in it.
Terrorism has no country, has no political ideology and is only loosely controlled by primitive religious pagan teachings.
Muslims have no place in the civilized world. Governments, being monolithic, are unable to sense what individuals can clearly see and that is that Muslim's must be "Wiped off the face of the Earth." to quote a Muslim "president."
