When does construction begin on the USS Clinton?

When the next Democrat becomes president. CVN-78 or 79.

Ironic, isn't it? Bush 41 is the one who started the big downward slide in defense spending, IIRC. For giving national defense the finger, he gets a carrier named after him.

It's funny -- the pictures don't really give an idea of the size of this thing, until you find something to give it scale. For example, there's an 8-foot stepladder in the bottom pic, at the bottom of the bow.... That ship is f****ing huge!

I would love to go to that. I served on two of those, Nimitz and Eisenhower. Did an overhaul period in Newport News on Ike, where I got to walk underneath the ship while in drydock.

They are huge!!!!

BTW, I also did a tour on the JFK during my 20 year Navy career.

That is not an 8' ladder. It is much taller. Check out the scaffolding behind it or the JLG in front of it. I suspect it is more like a 10 or 12 foot ladder.

...believe it or not, there is such a thing for
Mr. Slick Willie...... the classification for
such as you mention, if I recall my Navy days,
is a "YGN" which stands for "Y" - utility vessel;
"G" - garbabe barge; "N" - non-self-propelled.....!!
a perfect vessel to be name after the former
Liar-in-Chief..... free cigars and blue dresses to
be given away at its commissioning.....

There used to be a great cartoon version on FR about the USS Clinton; it was like this ridiculous looking rubber raft....anybody have it?

Excellent news. Jeff, how is the next carrier class(I think the CVX?) going to be differant than the nimitz class?

This will be just as inspiring an occurance. The next carrier, CVN-78 (no name yet), has already started initial stages of construction and will be an all new carrier design called CVN21. See my page about the CVN21 class on my World Wide Aircraft Carrier site.

Perhaps. There's 7 steps, including the top -- which is typically an 8-footer.

It's indefinite.

We don't need another garbage scow just now.

I wish they would hang that "Mission Accomplished" banner on the front of it and keep it there for good.

For whatever complaints one might have against him, I think at the very, very least, GW did accomplish the significant mission of getting us to start fighting back in a war that was declared against us a long time ago -- a very serious war that claimed the lives of a lot of innocent people and brave US soldiers, even before 9/11.

What caught my eye was the Headline and word "Christened".

To wit; how long before the ACLU sues the gubmint to stop the "Christening" of ships and boats. You know darn well that sooner or later they'll dig up some Atheist, Jewish or Wiccan sailor who will 'feel offended' that he has to serve on a ship that was "Christened".

(Bet its sooner than later)

It is ironic. After Desert Storm, he did preside over the beginning of the largest US Navy downsizing in history, next to after World War II.

However, he was a good wartime president and did lead the nation trough Desert Storm and the fruit of Reagan's work in the fall of the Soviets (which in part was a result of Reagan building the 600 ship navy).
