NICKEL MINES, Penn. (Reuters) - Two girls died overnight after a school shooting in Pennsylvania, bringing to five the number of students killed when a gunman burst into their one-room schoolhouse, state police said on Tuesday.

It was the third deadly U.S. school shooting in the past week and took place in an Amish farm community where there is little crime.

The gunman, identified as Charles Carl Roberts, 32, killed himself after lining his victims against the wall and shooting them execution-style in the head.

Does this mean his father is Amish? This opens up a lot of questions. Were his parents divorced when he was 12? Were they shunned?

Looks like his dad might have been a taxi driver for the Amish?

The Amish have private schools. They are religious pacifists. I have had serveral as neighbors and have worked along side them. In general, they are some of the kindest and gentlist folks you will ever meet.

They practice the religion of Jesus. They shun some modern things which they feel detracts from the spiritual life. In general, I have no affinity to pacifists at all. For the Amish and Mennonites, I make an exception. They don't talk about pacifism. They live it.

The horror of this scene is only made worse by the victims. My heart and prayers go out to the families.

I know Amish schools don't have security; they're pacifists. I was speaking of regular public schools. Apparently the security there hasn't improved as much as one would expect.

I was responding to post #25 about public schools. Sorry for the confusion.

My apologies. My nerves are a bit raw today. These crimes are so unspeakable that I find it hard to be resilient.

The guy that did the shooting is Charles Carl Roberts IV.

There is a Charles C. Roberts, III that is also a retired police officer.

Any idea when the police officer retired? This application appears to be from 2004, so theoretically, it could be the same person. Driving a taxi for the Amish would be a good job for a retiree.

I think that in many schools, security intensified after Columbine and in some cases relaxed after a while.

I imagine that it will increase significantly again, if that is the case.

I know also that, depending on the way schools are financed, that budget cuts have in some cases cut some security measures (not defending it, obviously, just saying that it has happened).

I can't believe that the recent increase in school violence even apart from this tragedy won't wake people up.

I'm just glad that he killed himself to spare us and the families some long, drawn out trial

Should have killed himself first and spared the little Amish girls. Sickening!

From the newsconference on now, I think it sounds like a copycat of the recent Colorado school killing. He sounds like he came prepared to molest the girls. The early arrival of the police interrupted and confused him.

You know, Amish have no phones. He may have counted on having more time than he did. He had KY jelly and wood with eye hooks planted, etc.

I too have homeschooled.

Sad to hear that the killer was also a homeschooler....

Sounds to me like the man was possessed by a demon. No doubt in my mind. I would be interested to hear if he had been involved with the occult in any way.

I feel so bad for the wife, and her little children. How awful that they will grown up knowing that their daddy, who they loved, killed other people's babies.

But, the thing that is really bothering me, about these recent school shootings, is that the adults involved all took the opportunity to run off and leave the children entrusted to them, in the hands of killers. They thought more of their own lives, than of the children's lives. Why not fight the gunmen and give some of the kids a chance to escape? Man, if everyone would have fought the guy, all the adults and the boys, surely no more kids would have been killed than were killed. And in a much less frightening way, for the precious little girls, than to be tied up and executed one by one.

In the end, I fear these teachers and other adults may find that they will have a hard time living while the children in their care were killed. ...

MSM is shouting about how he was homeschooled. I wish they would shut up about that. They make it sound like he was anti-social because he had no social time during his HOMESCHOOL time.....ugh!!!
