Update 2: Pennsylvania Police: Amish School is 'Horrendous Crime Scene' After Shooting
NICKEL MINES, Pa. At least two female students and one slightly older female who may have been a teacher's aide were shot and killed execution style in what police say may be a revenge killing for something that happened 20 years ago.
State Police Commissioner Jeffrey Miller said Monday that truck driver Charles Carl Roberts IV entered the one-room Amish schoolhouse in earlier in the day. The gunman brought in pieces of wood to board up the doors to the building when he entered the school. He also stacked desks against the building's doors.
"It appears that the suspect entered school with the intention of taking hostages," Miller said.
Roberts had wire ties and plastic flex cuff, which he used to begin tying the hostages feet together after they were lined up along a blackboard. He let go 15 male students, as well as one adult female who was pregnant. Three other non-student females with infants were also allowed to leave. One shotgun and one handgun was found next to the suspect when police entered the building.
"It seems as though he wanted to attack young, female victims," Miller said.
After a half hour inside, Roberts began shooting. When the gunfire stopped, three females were found shot dead at the scene, along with the suspect, who shot himself, Miller said. At least seven more victims some critically wounded were transported to nearby hospitals, he said. One victim, a young girl, died in the arms of a trooper, Miller said. He could not confirm how many people died en route or at the hospital. The county coroner earlier reported six children killed but then backed off of that statement.
Lest anyone need to be reminded....there are almost 300 MILLION people living in this country....not including the illegals.
There will always be a percentage of society that is prone to this type of behavior.
Add the 'copycat' factor and then this event shouldn't surprise anyone.
That is interesting information.
I once suggested that all faculty and staff who legally could, should be encouraged to carry firearms. and that they be concealed, and unadvertised. that way anybody wanting to shoot up the joint wouldn't know who would shoot back
No kidding. I'd be honored to have the Amish for neighbors.
My mistake in suggesting the Amish don't like guns at all. But they do abhor violence -- often even in self-defense.
There are only two ways to stop this sort of thing from happening in our schools.
We either treat the school building like a maximum security prison, with everyone entering passing through metal detectors and body searches supervised by armed guards; or we arm the teachers and staff.
Maybe the dems thing about "no rules" isn't working out in real life...
As opposed to a public school, where every teacher is allowed to carry firearms and use them to defend the students? Yeah, right.
You are exactly right. They even did a reality show about some of them. Not sure how that turned out.
Like you, the world is spinning too fast for me the last two weeks. Precious innocent children.
I've heard that they'll accept a technology if it doesn't isolate someone from their community & church.
Example - watching TV isolates people from family & community, but maybe they don't feel that cellphones will.
They also believe in bundling - something my parents would hae never allowed.
They haven't id'd the shooter yet. But the Amish don't use electric or watch tv. They use horse and buggies, no car radios either. It will be interesting to see if it is one from their own community. If so, they were not exposed to last week's news stories.
per CNN - Officers in field possibly looking for a teacher and students who ran out into the field - perp was NOT a student
"I think the Amish will continue to believe that guns and violence are evil."
The Amish own guns and hunt
. . .and oh the pain and suffering caused here by 'who'/what?
Waiting for the perp to be identified; as horrible as this all is; I hope he is from that Community and not 'outside'. (wondering, if this is a 'religious hate-crime as well or 'Amish rage' as per having to share the road or some equally inane reason here.)
The Amish by and large; are just such good and innocent people.
That said; Nancy Pelosi and Dem et al are probably feelilng upset; Redeker has just moved off the front page; if only temporairily.
