:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Karzai Says bin Laden Not in Afghanistan
-Full Story-

President Hamid Karzai has insisted that Osama bin Laden is not in his country, in the latest installment in a row with the leader of Pakistan who says the Al-Qaeda chief is in Afghanistan.

Other militant leaders including Islamist warlord Gulbuddin Hekmatyar were also not in the country, Karzai told reporters in a briefing about his visit to the United States that was overshadowed by the spat.

'I can assure you they are not in Afghanistan,' Karzai said yesterday after being asked for his reaction to comments by Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf who said Thursday that bin Laden is here.

Travel Warning
United States Department of State
Bureau of Consular Affairs
Washington, DC 20520

This information is current as of today, Wed Oct 04 2006 21:23:43 GMT-0700.

UZBEKISTAN

October 04, 2006

This Travel Warning is being issued to remind U.S. citizens that the potential for a terrorist attack or civil disturbance still exists, despite the fact that there have been no violent incidents in Uzbekistan since May 2005. Visas are difficult for American citizens to obtain and are often valid for a single entry of very limited duration. The Department of State continues to urge Americans in Uzbekistan to exercise extreme caution. This Travel Warning supersedes the Travel Warning of April 7, 2006.
The Department of State reminds U.S. citizens of the potential for terrorist attacks or civil disturbance in Uzbekistan, although there have been no violent incidents there since May 2005, and continues to urge Americans in Uzbekistan to exercise extreme caution. In addition, relations between the United States and Uzbekistan have deteriorated over the past year. Uzbekistan no longer allows the Peace Corps to operate and has ended the U.S. military presence in the country. Visas are difficult for American citizens to obtain and often are valid for a single entry of very limited duration. The U.S. Government continues to receive information that indicates that terrorist groups may be planning attacks, possibly against U.S. interests, in Uzbekistan. Supporters of terrorist groups such as the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, Al-Qaida, the Islamic Jihad Union, and the Eastern Turkistan Islamic Movement are active in the region. Members of these groups have expressed anti-U.S. sentiments and have attacked U.S. Government interests in the past, including the U.S. Embassy in Tashkent, and may attempt to target U.S. Government or private American interests in Uzbekistan. In the past, these groups have been known to conduct kidnappings, assassinations, and suicide bombings.

Uzbekistan experienced a wave of terrorist violence in 2004. Three suicide bombings occurred in July 2004 in Tashkent, including one outside the U.S. Embassy. Other targets included the Israeli Embassy and the Uzbekistan Prosecutor General’s Office. The Islamic Jihad Union released a statement claiming responsibility for these attacks. Multiple attacks also occurred in Tashkent and Bukhara in late March and early April 2004. These attacks used suicide bombers, and mainly focused on police and Uzbek private and commercial facilities. In late July 2004, approximately 15 people pled guilty in an Uzbekistan court to charges related to the attacks. The Islamic Jihad Union also claimed responsibility for these operations. In May 2005, armed militants stormed a prison in Andijon, released its prisoners, and then took control of the regional administration and other government buildings in Andijon Province. Fighting broke out between government forces and the militants, and reports indicated that several hundred civilians died in the ensuing violence. While there were no reports of U.S. citizens affected by these events, U.S. citizens and other foreigners in Uzbekistan frequently have experienced harassment from authorities and local residents since the 2005 violence.

Terrorist groups do not distinguish between official and civilian targets. As security is increased at official U.S. facilities, terrorists and their sympathizers seek softer targets. These may include facilities where Americans and other foreigners congregate or visit, such as residential areas, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, schools, hotels, outdoor recreation events, and resorts. In 2003, the U.S. Embassy received information indicating that terrorist groups had planned attacks against hotels in Uzbekistan frequented by Westerners, as well as against other institutions affiliated with or representing foreign interests.

The U.S. Embassy in Tashkent continues to employ heightened security precautions. U.S. citizens should report any unusual activity to local authorities and then inform the Embassy.

The Uzbek Government maintains travel restrictions on large parts of the Surkhandarya province bordering Afghanistan, including the border city of Termez. American citizens intending to travel to this region must obtain a special permission card from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, or Uzbek embassies and consulates abroad.

Americans traveling to or remaining in Uzbekistan are strongly urged to register with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate through the State Department's travel registration website, https://travelregistration.state.gov , and to obtain updated information on travel and security within Uzbekistan. Americans without Internet access may register directly with the U.S. Embassy in Tashkent. The U.S. Embassy in Uzbekistan is located at # 3, Moyqorghon Street, 5th Block, Yunusobod District, Tashkent-700093, Uzbekistan. The telephone number is 998-71-120-5450 and can be reached after hours as well. The fax number is 998-71-120-6335. The website is http://uzbekistan.usembassy.gov .

Travelers also should consult the Department of State's latest Consular Information Sheet for Uzbekistan, the Public Announcement for Central Asia, and the Worldwide Caution Public Announcement at http://travel.state.gov . American citizens may also obtain up-to-date information on security conditions by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the United States or Canada, and 202-501-4444 from overseas.

Iraq's Christians at risk of Annihilation
The Japan Times ^ | October 4 2006

Posted on 10/04/2006 5:19:06 PM PDT by jmc1969

Iraq's Christian communities are among the world's most ancient, practicing their faith in Mesopotamia almost since the time of Jesus Christ.

The Assyrian Apostolic Church, for instance, traces its foundation back to 34 A.D. and St. Peter. Likewise, the Assyrian Church of the East dates to 33 A.D. and St. Thomas. The Aramaic that many of Iraq's Christians still speak is the language of those apostles -- and of Christ.

In the Armenian Genocide of 1914-1918, 750,000 Assyrians -- roughly two-thirds of their number at the time -- were massacred by the Ottoman Turks with the help of the Kurds.

As many as 60,000, and perhaps even more, have fled since the beginning of the insurgency that followed the U.S.-led invasion in 2003. Their exodus accelerated in August 2004, after the start of the terrorist bombing campaign against Christian churches by Islamists who accuse them of collaboration with the allies by virtue of their faith.

Indeed, there are widespread reports of Christians fleeing the country as a result of threats being made to their women for not adhering to strict Islamic dress codes. Christian women are said to have had acid thrown in their faces. Some have been killed for wearing jeans or not wearing the veil.

Sadly, the plight of Iraq's Christians is not an isolated one in the Middle East. In Iran, the population as a whole has nearly doubled since the 1979 revolution; but, under a hostile regime, the number of Christians in the country has fallen from roughly 300,000 to 100,000.

"Ahmadinejad And The Liberalism Of Fools"
Jewish Press ^ | 10-4-06 | Rabbi Shmuley Boteach

Posted on 10/04/2006 5:36:13 PM PDT by SJackson

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Last month the impotence of the world Jewish community was on display for all to see. For all the talk of how the Jews control the media, the banks, and the American government, a man whose declared intention it is to wipe Israel off the map was treated as an international dignitary in the city that contains more Jews than any other on earth.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran not only spoke at the UN – from the very podium used just a few hours before by the leader of the free world – he was also invited to hold forth as a visiting statesman by the prestigious Council on Foreign Relations. So now the world Jewish community must contend with the sad truth that sixty years after the Holocaust a man can declare himself the new exterminator of the Jews and still be treated with respect.

As I watched the Ahmadinejad media circus fly through town – his face adorning the cover of Time magazine, his soft-glove interview with Brian Williams of NBC News, The New York Times’s front page coverage of his cool demeanor at the Council on Foreign Relations – I could not help but wonder whether a grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, whose declared intention it was to wipe out all traces of black life in the United States, might similarly be feted as a bona fide leader."

"Possible Military Connection to New Indonesia Arrest"
By Daveed Gartenstein-Ross

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "My colleague Nick Grace, of Global Crisis Watch, provides further details from the Indonesian-language press. He notes that later press accounts state that Kangiyani's age is forty rather than fifty-five, and that she was carrying 9 kg of explosives rather than 2 kg. But the most interesting aspect of the developing story is the possible link between the explosives and Indonesia's military. Nick writes:

The 40 year old woman was in the process of completing a sale of the materials to an Indonesian named Mahmud, who paid 3 million rupiah (equivalent of US$250 and approximately 3 months salary for the average Indonesian). Both were detained by [elite Indonesian anti-terror unit] Detachment 88. According to DetikNews and Jawa Pos, Kangiyani was selling the TNT on behalf of her husband, "AH," who is a sergeant in the Indonesian Navy. There are conflicting reports over whether "AH" has been captured and is under interrogation. . . . Mahmud claims that he bought the TNT for "fish bombs" so that he could more easily fish. Meanwhile, fear is building in Jakarta over suicide attacks and President Bush's planned 6 hour layover and visit with [Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono] on or around Nov 20.

One obvious aspect to this is the possible terrorism connection -- particularly if Kangiyani had 9 kg of TNT. Each of the three suicide bombers in the October 2005 Bali bombings carried around 10 kg of TNT in their backpacks. Nick Grace notes that Detachment 88 raided a house in central Java in May that netted a cache of TNT, and it's believed that rising jihadist star Noordin Top's branch of Jemaah Islamiyah, Tandzim Qaedatul Jihad, "is desperate to replenish its stockpile.""

Bush may visit Indonesia in November, officials say
The Jakarta Post ^ | 10/3/06

Posted on 10/03/2006 4:54:50 AM PDT by Valin

JAKARTA (AP): U.S. President George W. Bush may visit Indonesia next month to meet the leader of the world's most populous Muslim nation, seen as a close ally in Washington's global fight against terrorism, officials said Tuesday. If the talks are held, they would be the first on Indonesian soil between Bush and President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

The White House would not confirm the meeting, but Indonesia's Foreign Ministry spokesman Desra Percaya said Bush hoped to make the visit after attending the Nov. 18-19 Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Vietnam. "But the actual date and confirmation are still being discussed," Percaya said. Washington is keen to engage Indonesia because the secular nation has more Muslims than any other country - about 190 million - and is seen as a voice of moderation in the Islamic world. A series of deadly attacks by Islamic militants since 2000, followed by hundreds of arrests, also makes it a major battleground in the Bush-proclaimed war on terror.

Bush last visited Indonesia in 2003, meeting with then-President Megawati Soekarnoputri on the resort island of Bali a year after it was targeted by al-Qaida-linked militants. The Oct. 12, 2002 suicide bombings at two crowded nightclubs killed 202people, most of them foreign tourists. Indonesia's government desperately needs foreign investment, but being seen as too close to Washington carries the risk of a backlash by conservative Muslims and clerics, who like many Indonesians are upset over the war in Iraq and U.S. policy in theMiddle East

"2 Women Plead Guilt to EcoTerrorism"
AP ^ | 10/4/2006 | Curth Woodward

Posted on 10/05/2006 3:17:11 AM PDT by Aussiebabe

2 women plead guilty in UW ecoterrorism By CURT WOODWARD, Associated Press Writer Wed Oct 4, 5:48 PM ET

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "TACOMA, Wash. - Two women pleaded guilty Wednesday to conspiracy, arson and bomb charges in the 2001 firebombing of the University of Washington's horticulture center, one of the Northwest's most notorious acts of ecoterrorism.

Jennifer Kolar, 33, and Lacey Phillabaum, 31, were released without bail after entering the pleas in U.S. District Court in Tacoma. Authorities said the two turned themselves in and have cooperated with ongoing investigations.

Under their plea agreements, prosecutors will ask U.S. District Judge Franklin Burgess to waive mandatory minimum sentences on the charges of arson, attempted arson and use of a destructive device. That bomb charge alone would otherwise carry a statutory minimum of 30 years, and a maximum term of life.

The plea deals instead will ask that Kolar serve five to seven years and Phillabaum face a recommended sentence of three to five years. Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 5.

Neither woman commented to reporters after leaving the courtroom."

Descendants of a 'Lost' Tribe Head Home

A group of 218 people from a remote mountainous corner of northeastern India who claim descent from one of the lost biblical tribes will be immigrating to Israel as recognized Jews for the first time.

The aliyah of members from the B'nei Menashe community to Israel is a turning point, said Michael Freund, founder of Shavei Israel, which assists "lost Jews" seeking to return to the Jewish people.
A member of the B'nei Menashe community in India prepares for the Sukkot holiday.

"This is a major historical event, because these members of a lost tribe of Israel, after 27 centuries of wandering in exile, will at last be coming home," he said. (snip)
