"Late Passenger Pleads to Airport Threat"

ARTICLE SNIPPT: "A Florida college student pleaded guilty to calling in a phony bomb threat to the Long Beach Airport after he arrived too late to board his plane.
In his plea deal, Yechezkel Wells admitted he made the call to try to keep the plane from leaving. He told investigators he was upset that he wasn't allowed to board the plane and hoped the threat would cause a delay so he might have a chance to get on, authorities said.
Wells was arrested Aug. 26 shortly after he called 911 from a pay phone and said there was a bomb on a JetBlue flight to Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
The 21-year-old, who holds dual U.S.-Israeli citizenship, pleaded guilty Monday in U.S. District Court to a felony count of conveying false information of a threat targeting an airplane.
He faces from probation to five years in prison at sentencing Jan. 29."

A group of robbers were spotted near the propeller of a product tanker. Crew chased them away. Local authorities informed.
21.10.2006 in posn: 21:41.46N - 088:01.13E (0.8 miles north of CSF buoy), Sagar roads anchorage, Hugli river, Calcutta, India.
Three robbers boarded a container ship at poop deck and tried to steal ship's stores. Alert crew mustered. Robbers jumped into water and escaped in a boat waiting with five accomplices. Local authorities informed.

Robbers boarded a bulk carrier via hawse pipe and stole ship's stores.Incident was reported to local authorities but no help arrived.

Robbers were detected at stern stealing zinc anodes of a product tanker. Ship's crew threw empty bottles and moved the rudder to deter robbers. Robbers escaped in their boat. Local authorities were informed but no assistance arrived.

Robbers boarded a chemical tanker and stole ship's stores. Authorities were informed and promised to send assistance but never turned up. Master explained this is a normal reply to ships but help never arrives.

During routine rounds, crew on a chemical tanker spotted a robber onboard and chased him. Robber jumped into water and escaped in a waiting boat.

Six robbers boarded a container ship and stole goods from two containers.

Canada threatened by Al-Qaida over Afghanistan: report

OTTAWA, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Al-Qaida network has threatened Canada with terrorist attacks if the country still refuses to pullout its troops from Afghanistan, the National Post reported on Saturday.
The threat came from a document written by Hossam Abdul Raou, a member of the Al-Qaida information and strategy committee, the newspaper said.
The Canadians "will either be forced to withdraw their forces or face an operation similar to New York, Madrid, London," Raouf wrote.
The document was translated by a U.S. non-profit organization, the SITE Institute, which monitors the Internet for terrorist threats, the newspaper said.
The document also condemns Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper for keeping troops in Afghanistan and refers to Canada's alleged attempts to "damage the Muslims" and support for a "Christian crusade" against Al-Qaida.
Raouf wrote that "despite the strong increasing opposition to spread its forces in the fire of south Afghanistan, it seems that they (Canadians) will not learn the lesson easily."
Canada has more than 2,000 troops deployed in Kandahar, working with NATO to fight Taliban forces since the mission started in 2002.

CAIRO: Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak will seek Chinese help for Cairo's planned civil nuclear programme during a visit to Beijing next month, Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit said in remarks published yesterday. "The possible aid which China could give to Egypt over its civil nuclear programme to generate electricity will be one of the subjects of talks," Gheit was quoted as saying.
Mubarak heads for China after a November 1 to 3 visit to Russia. He will be in Beijing for a summit on Sino-African co-operation after which his visit will become an official one to the country on November 6 and 7.

N. Korea beefs up counterintelligence following nuclear test
SHENYANG, China, Oct. 29 (Yonhap) -- North Korea has toughened surveillance of locals suspected of gathering information about its atomic and military activities in the wake of its Oct. 9 atomic bomb test, an informed source said Sunday.
The Ministry of People's Security, Pyongyang's top police agency, issued a directive to its security agencies on Oct. 15 that they should closely monitor and report suspicious activities, the source said.
Those subject to stronger surveillance include former North Korean defectors, former convicts, smugglers, merchants and those who have relatives in China, the source said.
"North Korea issued the order for increased surveillance, believing that intelligence activities from the outside will intensify after its underground nuclear test," the source said.
The Security Ministry also decided to conduct a joint inspection with a regional army unit every month and such inspections of accommodation facilities twice every week, the source said.
As China joined the United Nations' punitive sanctions against North Korea for its nuclear test, Pyongyang increased guard patrols in its region bordering China out of fear of mass defections by its people, the source said. Also, the value of Chinese currency and rice prices in the North Korean market have risen, the source said.
"In the face of international sanctions, and concerned over possible mass defections, North Korea has dispatched a guard officer every 20 meters along its border region," the source said.

Morocco arrests 14 in ‘terror plot’
Morocco's relatively reformist leadership is, by virtue of its reformist tendencies, not sufficiently Islamic. And so it must be fought. From Reuters, with thanks to DFS:
RABAT: Moroccan authorities are holding 14 people suspected of belonging to a regional radical Islamist group linked to Al Qaeda, government officials said yesterday.
The 14 suspects had planned to carry out an unspecified "terrorist plot" on Morocco, with the help of Al Qaeda-linked foreign fighters who would travel from the Sahel-Sahara region, they said.
Morocco, a staunch US ally in the global fight on terror, has been on alert since 2003 when suicide bombings killed 45 people in Casablanca, the country’s commercial capital.
It has arrested more than 3,000 people since then and broken up more than 50 radical Islamist cells.
But it is the first time that the authorities have announced the arrest of people with suspected links to foreign cells.
"The 14 persons are suspected of being linked to a global terrorist movement which has connections with small groups operating in the Sahel-Sahara region and links with members of a group based on the Algeria-Mali border," an official statement said.
The statement did not name the groups but government officials said the small groups were Islamist cells linked to the main Algerian Islamic rebel Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC) faction.
Anti-terrorism police officials in North Africa and Europe have voiced concerns that the GSPC might turn itself into a magnet for radical Islamists in the region, providing them with weapons and military training in lawless areas of the Sahara desert.
The GSPC said in September it had joined Al Qaeda, whose leader Ayman al-Zawhiri urged the Algerian rebel group to become a "bone in the throat of the American and French crusaders".

In the debate about the reliability of electronic voting technology, the South Florida parent company of one of the nation's leading suppliers of touch-screen voting machines is drawing special scrutiny from the U.S. government.
Federal officials are investigating whether Smartmatic, owner of Oakland, Calif.-based Sequoia Voting Systems, is secretly controlled by Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez, according to two people familiar with the probe.
In July, a Treasury Department spokeswoman disclosed that a Treasury-led panel had contacted Smartmatic, and a company representative said his firm was ''in discussions'' with the panel. At the time, those discussions were informal. The government has now upgraded to a formal investigation, the two sources said.
Sequoia's electronic voting machines operate in 17 states. In Florida, the machines are used in four counties: Palm Beach, Indian River, Pinellas and Hillsborough.

Snip: The two commanders and an agent with the state's Ministerial Investigative Police were kidnapped Friday in Chilpancingo, the capital of Guerrero state. Their remains were found the next morning in a vehicle abandoned near a highway linking Acapulco and Mexico City, 180 miles to the north, said Jorge Valdez, a spokesman for the state public safety secretary.

Computer doctoral student condemns airline security

Unarmed hijack makes mockery of airline security measures
Snip: SERIOUS concerns were raised in Italy yesterday over the ease with which a lone, unarmed Turkish man managed to gain access to the cockpit of an airliner and hijack it.
All 107 passengers and six crew on the Turkish Airlines Boeing 737 were unharmed in the hijack, which ended with the arrest at Brindisi airport in southern Italy late on Tuesday of 27-year-old Hakan Ekinci.
Newark airport screeners failed 20 of 22 tests
Snip: They missed an array of concealed bombs and guns at checkpoints throughout the major air hub's three terminals, according to federal security officials familiar with the results.
The tests, conducted Oct. 19 by U.S. Transportation Security Administration "Red Team" agents, also revealed significant failures by screeners to follow standard operating procedures while checking passengers and their baggage for prohibited items, said the officials.
