PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: With the First Lady involved in events related to the National Book Festival this weekend, the President spent Saturday at Camp David where he enjoys the more challenging mountain bike riding trails. Yesterday, an article by Laura Bush (her preferred way of being addressed) appeared in the Opinion Journal of The Wall Street Journal. In it, the First Lady discusses the books that inspired her to champion literacy. Here's a link to the article, and following is the list of the books that inspired her, in the order she ranks them:
1. "Hop on Pop" by Dr. Seuss (Random House, 1963).2. The "Little House" Series by Laura Ingalls Wilder (Harper, 1932-43).
3. "The Brothers Karamazov" by Fyodor Dostoyevsky (1880).
4. "Little Women" by Louisa May Alcott (1868).
5. "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain (1884).
In the meantime, President Bush is set to campaign heavily for Republican candidates between now and election day. Tomorrow he beings a three-day swing through Nevada, California, Arizona and Colorado. White House Press Secretary Tony Snow said GWB will be on the road almost constantly between now and Election Day. "You're going to see a very active travel schedule. He's going to be all over the country campaigning for Republicans," Snow said at a recent breakfast. "There are a lot of candidates saying, 'Please, please, please, come to my district or come to my state.'"
The First Lady and Vice President Cheney have already been on a heavy campaign schedule. Now, with just over a month left in the mid-term campaign, the President will join them on the campaign trail.

*snort* Now THERE'S an understatement!
That's awesome that you're gonna get to see Tony Snow! It would great to plan one of our 'Doses' in his honor!
Hi snugs. You're right. She could be a great grandmother. The scenes are sweet though. Too bad Yahoo didn't identify the people.
Thanks for that link and typing up the words - wonderful
Hi there, yes, things are beginning to get back to normal .. sort of .. I was making a copy of a memory video to send to a relative, and decided to check the DVD to make sure it was okay. I was shocked to find myself sobbing while watching the video. Guess I haven't gotten over losing my mom just yet.
But .. the final approval of the cover of my book is just days away, and then the printing can begin. I'm really getting excited.
Please give me the link as well when you have finished I would love to see it.
Sure, I have to update this one website, tomorrow; and I'll try to do that little project, too. Thanks for the interest, snugs.
Off to call my Mom at 9 - nite all!
You're welcome, snugs. When the USS Constitution was a young ship, she fought. You might enjoy this short history from the official USS Constitution website:
Launched on October 21, 1797, she first put to sea in 1798. Having remained part of the U.S. Navy since her launching day, the Constitution is today the oldest commissioned warship afloat in the world.
President George Washington named her for the document, the Constitution, and she is the only Navy ship ever to bear that name.
USS Constitution is also the first American Navy ship to fight Arabs. In 1803-1805, President Thomas Jefferson sends her to the Mediterranean Sea as flagship of the third Mediterranean squadron. The mission is to attempt to force the Barbary pirates from their renewed policies of aggression against U.S. merchant shipping. With Commodore Edward Preble initially in command, the Constitution and other ships of the squadron mount five attacks against Tripoli.
During the War of 1812, the Constitution's historic fight with HMS Guerriere takes place some 600 miles east of Nova Scotia on the afternoon of August 19, 1812. After an hour of inconclusive maneuvering and shooting, the two settle down to a short-range slugfest. After 20 minutes the Briton's mizzenmast falls, and a short time later both her remaining masts go overboard. At some point in the battle, someone reportedly sees a British shot bounce off the Constitution's side, and shouts, "Huzzah! Her sides are made of iron!"-and so is born the nickname "OLD IRONSIDES." The Americans have 14 casualties; the British, 79. The Guerriere is so badly damaged she has to be sunk after the surviving crew are brought onboard the Constitution.
In recognition of this spectacular victory -- incredibly motivating to a nation that had seen many military defeats in the war to date -- Congress awards Capt. Isaac Hull a special gold medal, his officers medals of silver, and the crew $50,000.
I can beat that have not updated my CV for 25 years.
I'm thinking more of retreads like Eleanor Clift, Bob Beckel, and a bunch of others along those lines.
I wish you every success with it. :)
Something really intrigues me about that photo. I think it's the fact that President Bush is in focus with Mrs. Bush slightly out of focus in the background but very easily distinguishable. Artistically there's a message there. Something about it defines the role Laura has in Pres. Bush's life: not dominating his role as President as a former first lady did, but solidly there by his side, both looking forward together with purpose (not looking backward nor inward), while also companionably enjoying the joys they encounter on the whole journey.
Perhaps I'm reading too much into it, but I think that's one of the things defines true art: something that has a message for each viewer. :)
I agree that we need to be open to younger people and their ideas - not to pass over older people but to realise that the younger generation also has much to offer.
Exactly. That photo truly transcends mere news photography. It's a work of art.
I think that is a wonderful idea
Very much so. Younger people bring an energy and fresh perspective that, in its way, is just as valuable as the wisdom older people have acquired.
Ditto the WOO-HOO!
I think once before we had a three way tie but it is very rare.
Toffee covered popcorn I think
