With nine shooters in a small area firing 110 shots it is a miracle no officers were hit by friendly fire!!!

I was thinking the same thing!

Same story, a bit differently told ("You have to understand, he had already shot and killed a deputy, he had already shot and killed a K-9 and he shot and injured another deputy," Judd said by phone Saturday. "Quite frankly, we weren't taking any chances.") here (198 responses so far):

I also posted this on that message thread, so that people can see that it just wasn't another day at the range for the cops hunting down this armed cop-killer:

"Numerous law enforcement officers from throughout Central Florida, including SWAT team members, assisted with the search throughout the day Thursday and Friday morning. They went shoulder-to-shoulder cutting through extremely thick brush in the woods."

I believe studies have shown 4 rounds per second is the fastest a trained person can fire a SEMI-automatic.

Jerry Miculek, with his Smith & Wesson Model 627 Performance Center V-Comp .45 ACP Revolver, put 8 rounds into a target in one second. He also put 8 rounds on 4 targets in 1.06 seconds. and...then...6 shots, reload the revolver, another 6 shots, all in 2.99 seconds. :-)

See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DpCellB_UQ for a History Channel clip of these amazing feats!

Not that I am saying Mr. Miculek was on this SWAT team. :-)

Living in Florida on and off for over thirty years now, this outcome was 100% predictable. If you kill a cop here, they will kill you. Period. "He was shot trying to escape", or, "he brandished a weapon". Never mind those powder burns all over his shirt.

Not that this guy didn't deserve to die -- he did, and I'm glad he's now worm's food. Years ago, when the cops carried revolvers, the perp would be hit "several" times. Now that police are all carrying semiautos or subguns, well, they just dump the whole magazine into you, or as much as they can get on target, anyway.

This de facto standard in the behavior of the authorities, for better or for worse, gives real-life credence to the adage,"The first one will cost you your life -- the rest are free."

And yes, special punishment should be given to people who shoot policemen. It is especially egregious to shoot the symbol of civil authority. Get it?

Nope. Special punishment should be given to people who shoot me and mine. Why else would I pay taxes?

I am very surprised that they mentioned that the officer had been shot 8 times.

Don't know if it has been reported but a friend of mine in the Polk County Sherriff's Dept. said the last shot was with the barrel of the gun pressed against the officer's head.

No wonder they ran out of ammo.

“That’s all the bullets we had, or we would have shot him more,” Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd told the Orlando Sentinel newspaper.

Nothing wrong with this except that about 1/3 of the shots fired missed him.

It's a good ratio. The "target" was not standing stock still upright at 40 feet...he was in brush, moving, if not firing back, presumed to be ready to fire back at any second...

It's a great ratio, under those "combat" conditions.

As for the FReeper who suggested it was SWAT "overkill": This freak already shot and killed one cop, putting eight bullets in him. By definition: Armed and extremely dangerous. Once the cops located him, they're smart to presume the absolute worst: that he will try to kill them. And how do they know that he doesn't have one or more backup pieces?

A sad story with a very happy ending.

Killing a police officer carrying out their lawful duties is a worse crime than killing a civilian and it needs a worse punishment.

This is only true if you subscribe to the philosophy that the people exist to serve the government and not the other way around. Then any attack on a government bureaucrat is much more serious than an attack on the rest of us, because government bureaucrats are superior to the rest of us by virtue of being in the government. If you subscribe to the founding fathers' philosphy, that all men are created equal, then murder is murder, and any murderer deserves the same fate regardless of whom he killed. I just wish the police were as vigorous in pursuing people who kill 711 clerks, etc.

I think the saddest part of this whole thing is that the reason the first cop and K9 died is because they were trying to bring this guy in alive. It ended up getting them killed and now the FSO is being accused of overkill.

I don't blame them a bit for emptying their weapons. The guy was extremely dangerous, had already shown that he was willing to kill police officers, and failed to respond to verbal commands to show his hands. The police officers that shot him are all able to go home at night and hug their kids.

"I also posted this on that message thread, so that people can see that it just wasn't another day at the range for the cops hunting down this armed cop-killer:"

Here is the audio of 110 shots fired by nine men in 8 seconds. The perp was hidding behind a large tree, (see photo below). The "overkill" crowd needs to see this as Deputy Williams was shot 8 times and if you do the math, each of the nine SWAT members average less than that.

According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, Deputy Williams was cut down by eight gunshots, one of which was a contact wound, where the muzzle was touching his right temple.

The shots include:

• One shot in his right wrist.

• One shot in his left bicep.

• One shot in his left rear thigh.

• One shot in his right leg.

• One shot in his right buttock.

• One shot in his right upper arm.

• One shot at close range behind his right ear.

• One shot -- a contact wound, where the muzzle was touching his skin -- near his right temple.

The Lakeland Ledger

In case anyone missed this info, Deputy Williams is survived by his wife and three children, a twin son and daughter, 16, and a 19-year-old son. Deputy Williams was shot to death on his wife's birthday.

Wow, reality does still exist sometimes.. too bad cops have to have one of their own killed to be willing to do this.

I was thinking the same thing, but this was a SWAT Team, and you would expect them to be better shooters than the average cop, since they train a lot more with their weapons. Still, a 62 percent hit ratio is pretty decent. I'm thinking 11 shooters each emptying a ten round mag?

Ammo is a lot cheaper than prison time. This was a good investment for FL taxpayers.
