When National Security Leaks are Nothing More than Political Opportunities
ChronWatch ^ | October 01, 2006 | J. B. Williams

Clearly, some of those whom we have entrusted with our most sensitive national security secrets can not be trusted with secrets. Somebody working from inside our most trusted intelligence agencies, using hand-chosen pieces of those secrets to wage a personal political war against their political opponents, is providing aid and comfort to America’s enemies in that process. Not long ago, this was a traitorous act of treason. Today, those who seek to capitalize politically on these leaks, call it patriotic dissent.

The question is – what do American voters call it?

The Democrats should have been outraged at the leak... instead, they siezed upon its out-of-context opportunity.

It is permissible to leak national security secrets if they hurt the Republicans. Everyone knows that.

Democrats see nothing wrong with these leaks

Bin Laden and others have used anti-U.S. propaganda written by U.S. citizens and reporters, published by U.S. news agencies and regurgitated by democrat politicians and disseminated in DNC Talking Points fax-blasts for several months now. And still, liberals can not connect the dots between their anti-American rhetoric and the aid and comfort it provides our enemies.

No democrat has come forward to silence these leaks. Every democrat has embraced these continued leaks as nothing more than campaign propaganda tools to be used in their relentless quest to regain the political power than has eluded them since 1994.

Not a single democrat has denounced the use of illegally leaked classified materials as a campaign tool. This should make every American want to vomit! Why doesn’t it?

Instead, it causes American leftists to crank up the propaganda machine and rush to cash-in on one of the most hideous acts against national security possible.

There are only three potential purposes for such leaks

  1. The people’s right to know what their government is up to.

  2. A clear intent to aid, abet and comfort enemies of the U.S. who most certainly benefit from both the information itself, and the in-fighting and division it causes in America .

  3. As a political tool to be used by an opposition party currently out of power and desperately in need of campaign help.

The first purpose can be eliminated from this discussion because the people’s right to know has NEVER included a right to know Top Secret security data, plans, assessments or measures, especially while at war with an ongoing threat that targets American civilians and American cities. The people do not have a right to top security secrets - ask Sandy Berger.

The second purpose serves only those in this country who believe we are wrongly at war with enemies who openly intend America and her citizen’s further harm. These people unfortunately exist in America today. We have heard them repeatedly refer to the current administration and members of our armed forces as “the real terrorists”. We have seen them repeatedly attack every intelligence operation intended to root out sleeper-cells here and abroad. We have seen them attack standard and humane interrogation measures intended to seek out information that could prevent events worse than 911. These people seek to undermine America ’s war on terror and by default, national security. This purpose can only be called by reasonable people, an overt act of treason.

The third purpose should be obvious at this point. Someone inside our secret agencies, personally at odds politically with current administration policies and seeking to assist the opposition party in their efforts to regain control over U.S. policy making, has taken it upon themselves to illegally leak sensitive national security information that they believe will be helpful to their ideological partners. It’s happened so many times now, that there’s no missing the pattern or intent.

The Democrats should have been outraged at the leak.

Excuse me: I mean no harm, but you said the democrats should have been outraged ate THE leak. That infers one leak. There have been many leaks, and all of them benefitting the democrats and our terrorist enemies.,and believe me the Democrats are encouraging more leaks, they arent outraged in the least.

If you want to see outrage arrest convict and hang one of the leakers, Then you will see democrat oputrage.

These leaker arent patriots , they are traitors and should be shot by firing squad or hanged. There is no such thing as a small leak. If a traitor will leak secres information, that person should be found and arrested and a newspaper who prints this information should have its doors locked and bolted.

Dubya needs to fire all the clinton hold-overs in the CIA, FBI, etc. but that would upset the "new tone" policy. So we will continue letting the rats commit treason in order to make political points.

I agree with that.

Just because it was leaked doesn't make it less of a classified secret. Any media outlet that spreads it should be shut down and the editors jailed on suspicion of TREASON. Or at least the media outlet that "breaks" the story.

This would make the editors DO THEIR JOB and read what the hell they are printing. This would make them check stories and sources.

DOn't even get me started on this BS confidential sources crap. As a reporter(which I am not-you can tell by the spelling) you could just make up any damn lie and say you got the info from a confidential source.

Bush Administration should have vigorously prosecuted from the very beginning.

Tepid response is responsible for much of it.

So where are the prosecutions?

And please, no lame excuses about it being unlikely to obtain a conviction. Even if the chance of conviction is 1 in 100, you send a message by prosecuting.

There seem to be too many layers of bloated bureaucracy in the DOJ. Partisan Donkeyrats in high positions are likely responsible for the apparent lack of action.

Why aren't these people being prosecuted? Why was sandy burglar let off the hook? I'd really like a rational explanation.

The Democrats should have been outraged at the leak... instead, they siezed upon its out-of-context opportunity.

The Democrats have been pontificating about how leaks must be stopped and people who compromise secret information must be punished. Now they are gleefully making use of this leak and the Democrats have not even raised a question about the origins of this leak and whether or not such leaks are a good thing. Their attitude seems to be that they are entitled to leaks they find politically useful and someone had better provide them with leaked information.

Lets see...

1) No Abu Ghraib prisons. They just aren't nice to prisoners.
2) No Gitmo, same reason.
3) No electronic surveillance of international communications between terror cells, it's against their privacy rights.
4) No Treasury department snooping for terror funds, see reason #3.
5) No interrogating captured known terrorists to extract information concerning the next 911.
6) No fighting the enemy because it makes them fight back.
7) A kinder-gentler all-inclusive military trained to deliver pizza to the hungry.
8) and last but not least, Constitutional Rights and Geneva Convention rules of engagement for us, but no rules of engagement for our enemies.

Yep..you're right!

I don't think anyone is worried about not getting convictions. I think they are worried at getting torn to pieces by the press, who will rally around the leakers and squeakers and the democrats, who will claim Bush is now overtly attacking not only the First Amendment, but the peoples right to know...
